I agree, Ron...I fly often for work and I’d never try to sneak something past the TSA...I'd rather not have my underwear scrutinized in front of everyone else in line! The trial for the terrorists accused of trying to use liquid explosives to bring down airliners started just yesterday in London...we can thank them for the new restrictions. And I really do mean that, at least they were stupid enough to get caught before someone else used liquids to do some real damage.

We can be thankful that we can take some liquids now, albeit a small amount. At first they weren’t letting passengers take any liquids or gels at all. In September of ’06 I was going to Taiwan for work and the TSA went through my stuff and confiscated my mascara...if I had realized it would be a problem I would have put it in my checked luggage.

The women out there can appreciate how frustrating it was to lose my mascara at the beginning of a 10-day business trip in Asia. My eyelashes are blonde and disappear without mascara! And finding mascara in an unfamiliar country was interesting to say the least.

I guess the solution for Ruth’s sauces is to mail them home if you’re doing carry-on only :)

I think the problem is that no one would mind the hypervigilant security procedures if there was a sense that they actually worked. I, by no means, try to sneak things through - my attitude is if I forgot something and they need to toss it, toss it. Nothing is that important to me (well maybe except food for my kids).

I flew on the DAY the new liquid ban went into effect and my word that was a nightmare. I understood though and was more than happy to endure it to be safer.

As someone who has flown a lot and was on the extra screening/watch list for about a year, I think we all know these measures only serve to keep honest people honest. Those who are really out to do harm will find new and creative ways that have nothing to do with 3 ozs of gel!

My husband was too. He was coming home from a business trip and had to check his formerly carry-on luggage because of his liquids and gels...then his flight got delayed and delayed and eventually cancelled...so he had to go to a hotel for the night without his stuff because he'd already checked it!

The only reason I made my flight was because I decided to take a cab with my assistant. Her flight was an hour earlier than mine. I was lucky I made it through security in 2.5 hours and made it to my flight. There were 80 people trying to get on my flight standby. It was insane. They were letting people on the plane standby but then if the person with the ticketed seat made it through security in time they'd remove the standby person and put on the ticketed person. CRAZY!

IMHO, all these rules at the airport are designed to make us think our government is doing 'something' to protect us, it's citizens. Meanwhile, only 3% of the thousands of huge containers coming into the country get inspected, and there are still tons of illegal drugs coming in every week. If someone out there is really looking to cause us grief, it would seem to be pretty easy to sneak in whatever they'd want in all of that. Of course stopping all of that would be very difficult, time consuming, and expensive. And since we're spending all our national treasure to bring Democracy to Iraq, there's not much $$$ left to keep the borders secure. So they'll go after the easy pickings. Regular people that won't give them any problems or dare say anything for fear of being arrested. I'll get off my soapbox now...... time for a vacation.....

Thats kind of funny! We came home on Sunday also, and guess what we had in our carry ons, 3 bottles of hot sauces. This was our first time with carry on only, I packed everything up when we left like I was going to check it. Duh! I guess it was a big day for the TSA employees to stock up their cupboards at our expense. Sure hope they like the Blind Betty from St. John Spice.
Also funny you mention your three bottles. I was just on the phone with St. John Spice re-ordering and the guy I was talking to said he just filled an order for a lady who had three bottles confiscated from her. Could it have been you?
Looks like us criminals are good for the economy. :D

It's too funny - I was travelling back to STJ from Denver last year and the hotel I had been staying at had the most amazing yoghurt and granola breakfast available in "to go" containers.....well yes, you guessed it, I forgot yoghurt is a "liquid" (who knew ) I had put it on the screening belt and was called out for it. As I had over 2 hours to kill I replied that I would just go back to the lobby and eat it.........Oh no, can't do that I was informed. Should I wish to eat it I would be escorted by 2 TSA personel out of the airport and I would have to eat it away from the airport. Well I couldn't be bothered with that but now, looking back, I should have said OK - wouldn't that have been a sight, me, being escorted by 2 security personel and a container of yoghurt

As I am returning to Denver (and the same hotel in June) I just might have another go

Now THAT'S funny, Pia! Actually, this post may throw this into the off topic section, but I have to say it......TSA personnel are, for the most part, under trained, underpayed, and probably up until this job, unemployed, who find themselves suddenly in a position od power and authority. I'm afraid that power is sometimes abused for their own amusemnt. I have a ton a stories to tell, from TSA not being able to unlock the TSA approved luggage padloks (that was a thrill) to walking in accidentally on one of their top secret meetings at an airport.

What difference would it have made if you ate the yogurt off the airport or in the lobby? That's just silly. If they were going to assign two TSA officers to you anyway......LOL....

The TSA folks at Dulles are mean. Are they not allowed to speak? My son had a portable DVD player in his backpack which he did not take out and put in the plastic tub. They scanned the backpack for a couple minutes, then took it out and ravaged thru it like animals. I asked politely what the problem was...after all Jr. packed it himself and lord only knows what he may have thrown in there...anyway, they would not reply with words...just dirty looks  and the rolling of the eyes  Eventually they pulled out the dvd player and placed it in a separate bin and re scanned. I said "Im sorry about that". No response from TSA meanies. Is a little common courtesy out of the question? I agree that there is somewhat of a power trip going on there!

That's weird Pia, every once in awhile I'll accidentally leave a water bottle in my bag when coming home from a business trip and they've always let me chug it before going through. I just did it a couple weeks ago...I thought I left my bottle in the rental car, but there it was in my bag (they saw it upon x-ray). They told me that I could drink it and take the bottle with me, or that they'd dump it for me so I could take the empty bottle with and fill it up after security. And once when I was in Tokyo a couple years ago the Japanese guy got a kick out of seeing me chug a half a bottle of water when he found it. Silly American :)

Maybe you should be contacting the yogurt people to request a new solid yogurt so you can carry it on next time rather than blame the TSA for doing their job!

minnjim - not exactly sure how to take your comment but I am going to assume your joking right  ........... but just in the teeny, teeny, tiny chance you were being serious........

1) I wasn't blaming them for doing their job, it was the 2 security guards escorting me of property to eat a yoghurt that was funny

and

2) Let me know when you find solid yoghurt - better yet you should contact Blind Betty and have them make "solid" hot sauce so you don't waste 3 bottles - don't blame TSA for doing their job you know :!: (remember you did start this thread with not being happy with TSA and them enjoying your Blind Betty on your $20)

Boy, Pia must be hungry - you all know what I get like when I'm hungry

Bye for now - see ya tonight :)
