Sailing trip report: Days 5 & 6 - JVD and Cane Garden Ba
Day Five - Jost Van Dyke
Today our plan was to hit Jost Van Dyke; first the Bubbly Pool, then anchor at Great Harbor. So far we'd had to improvise almost every day due to extenuating circumstances. Let's see what today has in store...
The winds had finally calmed a bit, and with perfect following seas, we were making great time. This was my favorite sail of the trip - we passed between STJ and Tortola, then through the passage between Great Thatch and the The West End of Tortola, then straight on to Long Bay, JVD. I studied every detail of the northeastern shore of STJ as we passed, knowing in just a few days I'd be there...
While passing STJ, I managed to pick up a few bars of cell coverage and received a text message from Rosi (designbyroe). I returned a message to say that we'd be at Ivan's later in the afternoon.
Have I mentioned the search for chicken roti yet? Believe it or not, I had not yet indulged in a chicken roti . So far, the only opportunity was on our first evening at Peg Legs. Unfortunately, it had been a Lenten Friday, so I passed. Since then, we had not seen roti on a menu anywhere! The Last Resort was apparently too upscale for roti, and Pirates or the Willy T may have had it, but we didn't have a meal at either place, so didn't look for it. So between Foxy's Taboo (for lunch) and Foxy's (for dinner), today would be the day for chicken roti.
We arrived at Long Bay, moored, then dinghied to the dock at Foxy's Taboo to hike to the Bubbly Pool.

It was a beautiful day - not a cloud in the sky, which is unusual in the VI. The hike was especially pretty:

There was only one other group there when we arrived. The swells were perfect!

Swells in:

The guys were all over it. They would situate themselves between the rocks where the swells break to see if they could hold on through the big ones. They were like little kids - having an absolute blast!

Rod's lovin' it!

Where'd they go?

Happy kids!

We stayed for an hour or so, then hunger got the best of us (chicken roti, mmm!), so we hiked back to Foxy's Taboo for lunch. We sat down at a nice table by the railing with a view to die for, looked over the menu; everything is perfect... except there was no roti on the lunch menu! Bummer! Oh well, at least now I know what I'll be ordering at Foxy's tonight. Aside from the slight disappointment, lunch was good.
After lunch, we dinghied back and headed off to Great Harbour. We picked a spot, set the hook, and in no time had a new place to call home for awhile. Heather, crazy woman that she is, decided to jump off the top of the boat - you go girl! I think she missed her chance at the Willy T the night before

Hubby and I went ashore to make reservations for dinner at Foxy's. Ivan's was next on the agenda. We dinghied over, while Heather and Ray snorkeled (yes, all the way from Great Harbor to White Bay. The woman sets a mean pace, let me tell ya...
Upon arrival at Ivan's, I asked for Rosi (designbyroe), and within a minute or two, she came running down. So nice to finally put a forum name with a face! We has some drinks, chatted for awhile, and she introduced us to her "Dad" Ivan. What a sweet man he is!
Here we all are:

After awhile it was time to head back to get cleaned up for dinner. Unfortunately it was a salt water lather, rinse, repeat, with a final fresh water rinse - not so bad, really. Dinner at Foxy's! I was so looking forward to chicken roti - imagine my surprise to NOT find it on the dinner menu. Okay, this is on the verge of becoming serious! Carol and I were desperate for roti and it seemed there was none to be had. The solution: drink more Foxy's beer! I guess I can live with that

Foxy's Red Sox Nation:

Foxy was in-house tonight, visiting tables, entertaining his guests, and having a grand old time. Wouldn't it be nice to have a place like Foxy's and have such a good time in such a great place every day? Sigh...
Day 6: Sandy Spit and Cane Garden Bay
The next morning was a rather leisurely one. All that was on our agenda for the day was a visit to Sandy Spit, and Cane Garden Bay. CGB is not too far from JVD, so we were in no hurry. We went ashore again to poke around and do some shopping at Foxy's store (which we missed the night before). After making our purchases, Hubby and I chatted with Foxy for a bit while the others finished up. In addition to being the personality that he is, Foxy is quite up on American politics and enjoys the topic. It was so nice to stroll along the harbor in the morning. We said good morning to Ivan at the customs building. He told us that Rosi had already left. It was great to meet you, Rosi.
We were off to Sandy Spit. What an adorable little island! (Islands can be adorable, can't they?)

I found loads of tiny hermit crabs in the rocks along the shore. I honestly thought I had a picture of them - I have at least one of just about everything else. Oh well...
From there, off to Cane Garden Bay. Cane Garden was by far the most "touristy" place we visited. The beach is lined with small resorts and restaurants, lounge chairs, etc. It's nice, but quite different than the other places we had been so far. Dinner was on board tonight, so the search for roti would have to wait another day. Instead we had grilled chicken with rice and chopped veggies - nothing fancy, but not bad coming from the galley. We had a few boat drinks, then went ashore for a few drinks at Myett's. I really liked this place! It was a short walk down the beach, past Rhymer's and Stanley's. The deck area is lush with tropical foliage, the music was great, and the food looked wonderful. They have a grill pavillion where you can select your entree and watch while they prepare it for you. I'd love to go back for dinner sometime - Yep, I'll have to get right on that

Excellent, just plain great and nicely done - one of my favorite vignettes in long time. (I liked it). It was great to see Rosi (hi!!) and we need to get back to Ivan's.
Sweet Christine and I start our sailing lessons in May. I'm screamin' ready to get out there.
CaptainJay, I was looking at used live aboards again!
Cheers, RickG

Thanks for the reports and pics...very nice.
ILOVE that pic "Rod's lovin it"...it is a great visualization of pure joy ...IMHO.
So funny, there is a place on Aruba called natural pool that is VERY similar to bubbly pool, waves crash in from the ocean into a rock "pool"...lots of fun...I gotta make it over to bubbly pool so I can compare them...
