Inexpsensive 1-2 bedroom in Cruz Bay - recomendations

Is my post above a oxymoron, or am I the moron for thinking I can get something $150.00 and under within walking distance to Cruz Bay in the off season.

I would love a short Oct. trip and I'd like to get by with not renting a car the whole time. I'd like to stay within walking distance to town (we will have a 3 yr old with us) so no really steep hills.

I am totally off base or could there be hope for me. I really need this trip after a tough year.

I've been through this a few times - there are options:

1. Cruz Views ($125/night)
2. The Cottage at Battery Hill condos ($175)
3. Star Villas - have a few lower priced options
4. Samuels Cottages

Just do a google search on each one and you'll find more info. I'm sure others will chime in as well. Also, go to a site like villafish that lists most of the villas on St. John and take a look - there are some small places in that price range in Frank Bay.

The whole steep hill thing could be problematic. Are you completely opposed to taking a cheap cab ride back from town if the hill is too steep?

We stayed in Sugarbird at Star Villas a year ago and found it clean, comfortable and an easy walk to town. Off-season rate is $150/night.

Cruz Views is nice, but there is a steep hill to get to it. It would be hard for a 3 year old.

Consider Coconut Coast Studios - we found it clean and the owners are great! Rates are bit higher than you listed but if you could live with a studio, it's cheaper. http://www.coconutcoast.com/rates.htm

We stayed at Coconut Coast for a night in July and it was nice. However, there is no reliable, non-hilly way to get back to CC at night. You can cut through a path lined with dense vegetation when it's light out, but you'd need to take a taxi at night.

We stayed at Harborview from St. John Properties a few trips ago and it is $150 in the off season.

It's one bedroom with a great deck, above ground pool (a bit odd!), one bedroom, one bath. The owner lives above and there is a caretaker's apartment on site - although we never saw anyone there.

It is just up the road from Dolphin market so definitely within walking distance to Cruz Bay.

We have stayed at Coconut Coast for our last 5 trips and are staying there for 6th & 7th this year. The path around the pond is the best way to get town but alw1977 is right that it is not to be used after dark or after there has been allot of rain. I have back issues so going over "Heart Attack Hill" is not the way we prefer to take. We mostly go by taking the road that runs by this car ferry dock (look for the red and green poles when you head east from CCV), by the tennis courts and up around the ballpark. Easily doable for a 3 year old with a side walk to stop and take a rest if needed.

John & Nancy are great people to deal with. Tell them Mike & Becky from ILL sent ya.

Just want to start by saying I'm new to the forum but have been coming to St. John for five years and will be back for a two week stay (our longest trip)on April 17th.
Try Lavender Hill. It's right up the hill near Gallow's Point. We stayed there our first trip to the island and loved it. They have 1 and 2 bedroom units. You do need a car to get to the beaches though.

I second Lavender Hill though it's a little more than $150 per night. However you can walk to town, and the taxis will come right to LH to pick you up. We taxi'd almost all week - to Maho, Trunk, Hawksnest, Caneel (for Honeymoon) and to Pastory Gardens/Compass Rose. The transportation logistics were easier than I expected. There's A/C and a pool on site and a great balcony for relaxing once your child is settled in. Every Ting, that cute little store for snacks and goodies, is right across the street at Gallows Point.

Lavender Hill doesn't take children 4 and under. Which really stinks! When you have little toddlers, three big concerns are: 1. separate living room and bedroom so they can nap and go to bed at night and you can stay up, 2. dangerously easy access to a pool (e.g. right outside bedroom or doors), and 3. bedrooms that are separated from each other. So, condos like Lavender Hill or Gallows would be perfect, but I guess they worry about noise with the little kids around

Sorry...didn't know about the ages 4 and up thing. I guess since it was just the two of us it wasn't a factor. But the proximity to Cruz Bay was plus.

I've never stayed at any of these places, but I've known folks who have. This is truly a lovely neighborhood. It used to be fairly residential, I'm guessing it still is. All of these "villas" are fairly easy to walk to (although there are some inclines), without having to go via "path" or trail which might be tough with a little one.
