This year we are taking our children and would be happy to leave their clothes and sneakers behind if there is a need.
Oh my gosh yes! That is a fabulous idea. We have a place that would LOVE to have your sneakers AND the kid's clothing. I will try to get the information tomorrow and get back to you, unless someone else does it here first.

Pia,
Thanks so much for the tip of leaving things at the dumpster. We too have left shoes, clothing kids life jackets in the villa. We will leave them at the dumpster next time.

We must be renting from the villa company that takes everything. In the first villa there were some spices, ziplock bags etc. But the next two villas have had nothing.

Do you think the cleaning crew is allowed to keep any of the perishable or non perishables items that are left behind? I would like to think someone has been able to take advantage of everything we have left.

Yes, this particular rental company allows the cleaning crew to take all food/alcohol etc so nothing is wasted so that is a great thing - it's just that each renter has to go out and repurchase alcohol (not that they wouldn't anyway  ) spices, mayo etc.

It is always so helpful if there is bug spray, plastic wrap, baggies, etc...left in the villa. As well, we pretty much expect coffee filters that fit the coffee maker, paper towels, and garbage bags. Sometimes there are a few odds and ends left in the 'fridge which we never partake of because we don't know how old they are (open katsup, mayo, etc).

The dumbest thing we've encountered (more than once) is the "welcome basket" that has a brick or two of cheese in it...left on the counter from heaven knows when earlier in the day. Nothing like a half melted brick of Kraft cheese to greet you. Okay, after a 16 hour travel day, I do not need come down with a good case of botchelism. At least throw it in the 'fridge! (This has only been the case with two of the rental companies we've worked with over the years and not the one we are currently using).

We always leave our extra booze, bug spray, sun goo, batteries, candles and the ever important clothes pins (as mentioned in one of my previous posts, these puppies rock for holding your towel down on your lounge chair while lounging).

Oh ya, I leave books and magazines behind, too.

I've never left shoes though. Mostly what I take to STJ to wear comes home to be worn again.

Missing St. John. As always.

As you know, we booked today and I got a welcome letter from the owner of our villa.

In the letter, he mentioned that they will be leaving some things at the villa for us and said that if we had to buy anything like olive oil, butter, mustard, etc. to please write the date we purchased it on the bottle and leave it for the next folks. I thought that was a good idea. He also said they have a fully stocked bar, but if you use an entire bottle of top shelf whiskey, they do ask that you replace it with a new bottle of something comparable.

I think that's a very good policy.

California Girl, the house you are thinking of is One Particular Harbour.

I thought of another thing we leave behind--snorkel gear, especially fins. I am still searching for the perfect pair of fins.
It's like looking in your soup and finding a whole different alphabet.

These are the ideal fins, 1.5 lbs a pair, velcro on across the top of your foot for comfortPand easy on & off, mix and match colors and designs, pack flat like a dream. pricey at $125 but when mine were stolen while I was napping at Hawksnest, I went right to a computer ad ordered another pair.

Oh so worth it! Mine are Hawaiian floral booties, clear and hot pink fins. :D

Hmm, can you give us a bigger hint so we can find them ourselves? :D

This is our first time renting from a particular owner (and first time on the island). I am planning to buy a decorative item that matches the condo as a Thank you gift. Is this a good idea? I've done this in the past at other places. Don't know how often they use it themselfs though.

I always leave unopened things to our maids or next owners at our time share in Aruba and its always appreciated. Hope ours have things in it when we get there!!!

elisa_nj, the villa we rent (Sundance) is owned by a couple that live else where on island, so they don't really use the villa themselves. As to buying something for the place, I don't think most folk do that, but it is up to you.

We left pool toys and the snorkel gear that doesn't fit my teens any longer. We also left some books, medicine (advil, etc), sunblock, and a few things in the freezer that we didn't use.

That was nothing compared to what we got. There was loads of alcohol. We didn't use any; when we first saw it my husband and I eyed eachother and promised we would have a cocktail--just never did.

There were a lot of books, guide books, first aid kit, zip lock bags, spices, olive oil, crystal light, etc. I could go on and on. I wish I would have known--we could have left a lot at home.

Anyway, I think what a lot of you do is very thoughtful!!
