Denis Bay

Post by iowaguy »

Thought it might be fun to hike down to Denis Bay on this upcoming trip. I understand that to get there you take an "unmarked spur trail" shortly after getting on the Peace Hill trail from the Peace Hill parking lot. Is it pretty obvious what trail I should take? Is it now marked? I don't want to be wandering aimlessly around unmarked trails. Thanks!

this is the entrance to the spur trail:

You have to duck down a bit to get through the opening, but it's not too bad.
It's like looking in your soup and finding a whole different alphabet.

OR you could snorkel from Jumbie, around the point to the left, and land at Denis. This is my personal favorite way to get there.

I was looking at this on the St. John beach guide. Looks very nice. How long a hike is it? And how far up to Peace Hill. The beach is NOT private, correct?

Denis Bay trail is not that hard of a hike. If I was to compare to Salomon trail hike it was definitely easier and shorter. I would guess less than half a mile. We were there last thursday for the first time. We really like the beach and its not private just the areas behind the beach right across from the old dock area are private. There were only a few people there which was great.

It's been a while, but as I recall, there's not much to see (when compared to SO many other beaches onisland). What there is, is over on the right (as you're standing on the beach looking out) and the anchor of course. Have never ventured very far to the left though, so can't say about that. The middle is pretty much just sand.

It is a gorgeous beach, my favorite, and almost always empty (or very nearly). There are some people who live there so if you visit, please be respectful of their property and space (all beaches are public property, but beyond the tree line is theirs).

There's a rock off the point. It can be a fun, short snorkel around the rock, or you can take your time and get down to see the critters and coral. Around to the left and behind the rock is deeper water. It gets real shallow on the right. The beach gets blasted on windy days and the water can be rough around the rock. There's also good water and snorkeling around the point to the left.

It's a hike into the beach from the parking lot. I prefer setting up at Jumbie and snorkeling around to Denis, while Mrs Random lounges in the sun with a good book.

Hey- We're getting psyched for our first trip to STJ on 6/21, Denis beach has made the "to-do list" and I'm wondering where we would find the anchor and any other cool stuff to check out while snorkeling.

I dug up this old post and read what was here...

Any suggestions or experiences to share :?:
Thanx-

Denis is one of my new favorite beaches. We have only been to Denis twice. Both times a naked guy comes out of the private property and goes swimming for about 5 min. Good thing we like the other end of the beach.
