Do you visit other forums?

Post by sea-nile »

I was just wondering if any of you visit other forums (any topic) and what ones.

I have tried TripAdvisor and am starting to go there more with my upcoming Kauai trip, but I just find that there aren't any others like this one. With the exception of a few people, this forum is informative and extremely friendly.

I've tried to find forums for other topics, like parents of teens, cooking, SCUBA, exercise, etc., but they are usually not too active.

I also spend too much time on this one to visit other ones regularly. :D

It happens that I use Tripadvisor for other destinations than USVI. Perhaps once a month I see Vinow, but yet I haven't seen any forum like this.

sea-nile - good question.

My first and the one that I have been visiting the most:

http://www.traveltalkonline.com/

And especially the BVI forum but also the USVI, World Wide, BVI Talk (like our OT-forum). And they also have a trip report archive (sp?) whick is very good if you search for information before a trip. Might be something for VIOL.

Another forum, that I have been visiting since I took my SCUBA cert, is http://www.scubaboard.com/

But I like this forum very much. I do agree that it's usually very friendly. And it's so much fun to meet fellow forumites in reality.

sea-nile - you are going to love Kauai. It's such a beautiful island. We honeymooned there.

I tried a couple of others before someone at Fodors sent me here. No need to go back! I have looked for things on TripAdvisor and they seem to be OK. This is my favorite for sure. :D

It seems that there are one or two good forums around for every location/subject.

Last year when we went to Aruba, I found a great Forum for that destination that was great...informative, "professional", organized...it was a huge help for me to use it before we went.
http://www.aruba-bb.com/

I visited VINOW for a while before I found this one but there seemed to be alot of online arg=uing at the time and it drove me off...

I also look at trip advisor from time to time...

I's also looking at a trip to Peru as a possibility and there are a few forums I am perusing on that topic currently.

Google Earth community also has links to a plethora of info about places in many different formats, I find it fascinating--

This is my favorite USVI forum. I read vinow once in a while, and used to post there on occasion, but I don't think it has the energy of this board.
It's like looking in your soup and finding a whole different alphabet.

traveltalkonline is the best for BVI.

I hit vinow and tripadvisor for some STJ fix. Those forums are much more "just the facts."

We really could build a STJ FAQ. We seem to answer the same questions again and again.

Yes, and we do it so politely. :D If you go to that "other" forum, you get tongue lashed for asking a question that is obvious to a regular. I do like your idea of an FAQ.

I really do want to do this - we have some client work to finish, but I am hoping to do a major overhaul of the site and include a FAQ that may be set up as a blog or wiki so people can add and edit to it as information changes, etc. This will definitely come before the summer. The whole site (other than the forum) is going to change and there will tons of new stuff and new ways for people to leave information.

I started out on VINOW and found this forum via that one. Once I got flamed over there enough times I left it for good. This is the only forum I frequent now. Before and shortly after my Cayman Is. trip, I was visiting the Trip Advisor Cayman Islands forum and found those people friendly and helpful. I posted my trip report on Anthony's Cayman forum, with a link to it on TA, hoping to get Anthony's Cayman forum revved up, but nada. Everyone who commented, kept their comments on TA. Now that that trip is done, I'm only on this forum.

I visit TTOL (www.traveltalkonline.com) frequently. Their BVI forum is very good and active; the USVI is also good, but less active. I met a few folks on VG in 2006; we were all staying at the same place. VINOW every so often to search or to see if I can read some of the nasty posts.

Bermuda Shorts forum for - Bermuda :D That used to be a very active forum, but it has really died down lately.

Fodors when I'm looking for info stateside.

Cruise Critic (www.cruisecritic.com) was invaluable for planning our Med cruise. Kind of a mix in personalities - some were "don't waste my time - go search" others were quite helpful. There are roll-call forums for each cruise. I was able to meet some of the other passengers ahead of time on-line and we had a "meet and greet" on one of the sea days. It was fun bumping into a familiar face on the Rialto Bridge or a wine shop in Greve.

Not a "chatty" forum, but I visit Bidding For Travel whenever I'm getting ready to bid on Priceline. Gives me a good idea of what's being accepted in the area I'm bidding. Also learned some good priceline strategies.

I visit Chowhounds now - learned about that one from this board.

For VI/STJ info, there's no place like home. :)

I also frequent forums for Gators sports, BBQ, and scuba diving.

Like others I arrived here via the VINOW forums. I just wish there were other locations that had similar forums to this one. I'm planning a trip to Cozumel for June, and even the ones with folks that have a lot of knowledge aren't as active, nor as friendly, as this one!

This forum is my fave but I also really really like TTOL. I've been hanging out there in prep for our VG trip. I read VINOW and Trip Advisor with a very occasional post to both. I also read Fodors if I'm bored.

I like finding "the" travel forum while planning any trip to anyplace we've never been before. I've even found "the" Tahiti forum ready and waiting for that trip to French Polynesia I keep pushing back.
