So, how'd you hear about STJ?

Post by Dave-a-roni »

Ok, so we all love our little island. Some get to go several times a year, some only once, but we all love it the same. What I'd like to know is how you all heard about it? Let's hear your story :)

Mine.
I work for my uncle, a small local buisness doing home improvement. One of our customers hung around to talk to me as I was working on his house. He was a retired guy, and told me he just got back from an island called St. John, and continued to ramble on about it and I was totaly stuck on every word he said about it... it sounded like paradise! He and his wife went at least once a year through his time share at the Westin. Since at the time I was getting married in 6 months or so, it sounded like a fantastic place for a honeymoon... the rest is history.

Hey Dave!!

I had a coworker/friend in the late 1990s who was always raving about her vacations to St. Thomas.
Well, when my fiance and I were planning our honeymoon, we starting researching St. Thomas, but soon decided that St. John looked more our speed! So we booked a villa on St. John for 10 days. When our wedding plans at home started getting crazy, we decided heck with it, we were just going to get married on St. John! That was in July 2000. We went back to St. John in 2002, but haven't been able to get back since. However, we are going back this July...6 years later...and can't wait! :D

Wow Jodi! You are long overdue! Enjoy!

While I was in college my parent's took my brother and I on a cruise and we spent a day on St. Thomas. We loved it, but always heard about Trunk Bay on St. John. So on the next cruise when I graduated college, we took the ferry to St. John for the day and absolutely loved it. We went to Trunk Bay and Woody's and that was good enough for us to not want to get back on the ship. It was then a goal of mine to get back to St. John for an entire vacation. My family always went to Mexico for the beach so after Jason and I married, we planned a trip to StJ and I told my parent's and brother we were going. Then, they decided they needed to go too. We went the first time last May, J and I went back in August with another couple and the family, plus one other couple is going again in May.
It's addicting for sure!

I read an article on the Virgin Grand Resort in Cosmopolitan magazine - it sounded like the most romantic place on earth. At the time I was very single and took vacations on the Club Med circuit (fun, fun, fun!).

Finally visited in 1991 and stayed at the Virgin Grand Resort (OK - it was actually the Hyatt, now the Westin). Loved the Bushwackers at the Beach Bar (which was a sushi bar).

Returned for a day off a cruise in 1998, then returned in 2000 for our 10th anniversary. We now make an attempt to go back every 2-3 years.

I had been going to PR for business, taking my wife, and saying over to get in a few days of beach therapy  . We told our travel agent that we had pretty well worn PR out and were looking for an alternative. She asked us if we'd ever been to STT. While telling us about it, she said you have to try to spend at least a day on STJ 8) . We did and our fourth trip is scheduled for 106 days and a wake up :D .

My husband's (then boyfriend's) mother wanted to do a family vacation to paradise and I was invited!!! Woo-hoo!

Well, I had to marry the guy after THAT!

He bought my engagement ring in STT on that trip and we celebrated our honeymoon in the next two trips (one with family, one without).

I consider myself so lucky to have found the caribbean paradise such that is STJ.

We actually won a trip from a 7-Up sponsored contest called Uncola Island in 1994. Yes, people really do win those things!! The trip was to STT, we took the ferry for a day trip to STJ, rented a car, explored for the day, fell in love and the rest is history so they say! That was our 10 year anniversary, we are celebrating 24 years this year with yet another trip planned for December!! I can't imagine going any other place, just feels like home. I only wish I could go more often!!

I found it myself through research. I was looking for a not too crowded island with off shore snorkeling. My husband kind of wanted an all-inclusive. So, we almost went to STT, but with the help of people on the other forum, we chose STJ.
I am so glad that I did my homework!

My sister's co worker told her about a bunch of girls going on vacation to STJ. They were gonna rent a villa with a pool. So my sister says to me "plan a vacation for all of us on STJ. Rent one of those villas with a pool. Just tell me how much and I will send you a check." I got online and started the research and eventually was directed to this forum!
Now I have 3 more STJ trips in the works. STJ turned out to be perfect for us. LOVE IT!

We came to St. John on a whim in October 2003 after our planned vacation to Bermuda got wiped out by a hurricane. John's passport was expired so we needed a place to go without a passport.

One of my coworkers said she had a friend that liked to go camping at Cinnamon Bay on St. John. She sent us a couple of pictures of the beaches, and told us to rent a jeep and get a house. In about a week John found a house on vrbo and we came down, knowing next to nothing about the island. The left-behind copy of “Feet Fins and Four Wheel Drive” in our rental jeep’s glove compartment saved our vacation!

Thanks to that book, we got to all the big beaches on the island (except Lameshur, we were too scared to go up the road, heh heh). We loved St. John so much that we ended up extending our vacation for a few days. We called both the Westin and Caneel to see who could offer the better deal to us. Caneel won!

Ironically, later that year I went to a large family gathering with extended relatives I had not seen in some time. I found out that my aunt and uncle had been going to St. John since the late seventies, that they had actually bought property at Coconut Coast, and that my cousins had been going down almost every year to stay in their condo for free! I was soooo jealous! That's what we get for moving away from the clan, I guess.

Went to St Martin (French side) for a few years. Then Mrs. Random found a nice villa in Hull Bay on STT. We had an ephiphany while sitting on Sapphire Beach...that island across the bay, STJ, we must go. That was 9 years ago.
When the going gets weird, the weird turn pro.

In the early 90's my fist husband and I decided to try an island vacation. We were trying to figure out where to go when a business associate told me about their Niece and Nephew who live on this beautiful little island.

She told me how her Nephew was a teacher and her Niece a travel agent on the island and she could help us make the arrangements. Next thing I knew, I was on STJ thanks to Mrs. Provost and Jim was taking us on a tour of the island. It was so nice to get to know the island with someone who lived there. I will be forever greatful!!

Since then many things have changed in my life (new husband, kids, etc.) but my love for STJ has not. I have been back every year since.

XOXO

I returned from a trip to Maui on 1/6/07 and began plotting my return to sunshine the next day. I had used the "other" forum extensively to learn about Maui, and read a post there titled something like "Where Else Is Like Maui?" One of the responses said that STJ is like Maui was 25 years ago. The lightbulb went on! A post on the same forum led me to this one.

Once I booked our trip, so many people I know told me they'd been there, many on their honeymoons. Half of them called it "St. John's" which makes me cringe a little.

I did later read a post that said Bequia is like STJ was 40 years ago, and researched that for awhile too. But the STJ vibe really suits my family, and I absolutely plan on returning! (Sadly, all my miles are on United, and I can't find award travel to STT because US Air is used for a return. :( So I was on the phone at 3:00am today, using my miles for a trip to Kauai. But I continue to obsessively lurk here!)

My brother and sister in law bought a boat in the CYOA charter fleet, and in 1997 invited us to go with them for a week......11 years and 15 trips later(they sold the boat in 2003), I still get goosebumps just thinking about it. :D
