day trip to the baths
day trip to the baths
We will be coming to STJ the first of May. This is our second trip, we came last May also. Last year we stayed on island the entire time. We were considering a trip to the baths this year. What would be the best way for us to get there? Most of the online info I've found talks about them taking you on a 1 hr tour of the baths, etc. We've very independent and would like to make our own schedule while we are there. We enjoy sightseeing and snorkling. Is there anywhere in addition or instead that we should go? Everyone here has been so helpful in the planning of both of our trips. We thought we would go somewhere else this year, but when we researched lots of other islands, we decided no others offered what STJ did, so we're coming back.
We made a stop at the Baths while on a sail boat charter a few years ago. It's pretty neat to see but I understand that the day trip boats don't give you much time there. I think I'd look into taking the ferry there and back if I were to do it again. If I went back to Virgin Gorda I'd like to check out the snorkling at Savanah Beach which would mean you'd have to take hire a taxi. Snorkling at the Baths wasn't worth the bother of taking the gear IMHO.
If you REALLY want to see the Baths consider a ferry rather than a day boat. You can take a taxi from the ferry dock to The Baths. It's a lot of travel for one day.
We did the New Horizons II trip in 2005. It was a fast boat and covered a lot of territory. Another option is doing Palm Tree Charters. The Baths trip uses a lot of gas!

VG offers a lot and taking the ferry is a good way to go. The only taste of VG that a lot of folks get is a brief stop at the Baths as part of an excursion. They swim in, move through the caves in a pack, then swim back to the boat and head off to the next stop on the itinerary. The question does get asked "Which island is this?"
Going by ferry gives you several hours on the island. You'd probably be very happy just getting a taxi to the Baths and spending your time going through the caves and snorkeling around the Baths and Devils Bay. Devils Bay was one of our favorite spots both for snorkeling and for just hanging out on the beach.
There are a couple of restaurants at the Baths---Top of the Baths and Mad Dog. Both are great places to spend time. Top of the Baths has a real world-class view. There's also the Poor Man's Bar on the beach.
Then you could head back to Spanish Town, giving yourself time to poke around there before you'd have to catch the return ferry. That would be a real good day. It would probably get you thinking about maybe spending more time on VG, which is exactly what happened to us. Just fyi---the STJ<-->VG ferry only runs two days a week--Thurs and Sunday.
