Weather in July

Post by Noreen »

Hi all, I realize this has been covered, but didn't find early July advice when I did a search.

The extended family is considering a trip the first week in July. We'd be staying at Caneel. My question - is the weather likely to be very humid in that location at that time? Jim and I have only travelled in later months, and we stay up on Bordeaux Mountain with a constant breeze.

Thanks for all input. I've raved about Caneel and St. John so much that my MIL is willing to take the plunge, but she's terribly sensitive to humidty.

I've never been in July but I will tell you my buddy Gromit went in July and said it was pretty hot. Tolerable but hot.

I will also say that November was CONSIDERABLY cooler than May, not cold. But more comfortable for me. I LOVED the weather in November and if not for the kiddo's school schedule would probably always travel then - off season rates and great climate.

I was there in late June 2007 and it was quite hot and humid. You will still have a wonderful time though. Dress accordingly and hit the beaches and the pool. The water will be so nice!

We went in July last year and June the year before. Yes, it is hot and humid, but we love it. The water is ideal and there are fewer visitors :) We spend most of our time in the water :D Anytime on STJ is perfect!

Hi Noreen,

I was on STT in July '07 and it was bearable. I've been living in SW FLA for 5 years now, transplanted from New England...so I'm a bit more use to it. But, if you're going to be hanging out at the beach or pool during the "peak" sun hours and save any "strenuous" activities to early mornings late afternoons/evening then you'll be fine. Guess it depends on what type of sensitivity your MIL has. Oh and we didn't even feel one drop of rain then either!

The only thing I missed was not being able to have the condo windows open to hear the waves cuz of the A/C running.

Good Luck with the planning!

Remember, too, that there is really good AC at Caneel. If she is sensitive to the hunidity, I would recommend hitting the beaches in the morning, then getting into the ac around 11:30 or so for lunch and a nap. Go back out around 3:30-4 PM for another swim, then get cleaned up for dinner. The nights are a little breezy (but still warm!) even in July.

Noreen:

I've vacationed at STJ during the 1st week of July about 5 times. Agree w/ everyone else here thats its warm & humid then, but not oppressive (IMO), as compared to NJ during the same time. The tradewinds provide some nice relief too.

Sun is directly overhead then, so protection from overexposure should be considered.

We have done both June and July at Caneel. I remember the July weather as hot but really breezy. We loved it.

Hi everone - thanks so much for the valuable input. I'm going to share your advice with her, and she can decide if it might be too much. Loved the comparisons to NJ and FL, as I've lived both places. I would take humidity almost anywhere other than here - NJ.

And I'm glad to hear Caneel has breezes during the summer. I hope we go, because it means an extra trip to St. John for us. Selfish!

Hi Noreen!

We were there first week in July last year and were in Cruz Bay for Festival on 4th. So humind you felt like you were breathing in steam! But we wouldn't have missed the parade for anything - it was awesome and so much fun. If you go, be prepared that island time means it starts two hours later than advertised - we walked up to starting point and followed the parade to the end - loved dancing behind the steel pan band - take a soft sided cooler of water bottles and stay hydrated! Have fun :D

Greyhoundmom, July 4 in Cruz Bay sounds perfect. However, the family found a better situation at another resort, so I will have to wait until October for my fix!

Thanks, everyone. I'll get the group down to St. John eventually. In the meantime, Antiqua isn't too shabby, either!
