planning a daysail need real opinions

All of the ads sound wonderful. I am hoping you will help me decide. We have booked for May 2007{Yipppeee!!}, our second trip to STJ. My husband likes to kick back, while I would like to snorkle. I have only snorkled three other times, for very short times {I need to learn a lot}. I want to make sure that if I am done in a half hour, say, that I wouldn't be putting anyone out. I am excited that these sails offer the snorkle time. Any suggestions would be greatfully excepted. Thanx forum-ites. La~

I'm excited for you and a 2nd trip to STJ, it's addicting isn't it??

We have only done 1 daysail and that was with Capt. Phil on the Wayward Sailor. There were 4 of us and 1 guy, plus Capt. and 1st mate (or whatever they're called). He carries only 6 passengers, or I think he'll do a private charter.

His boat is small & nothing fancy, but it was a wonderful day. He knows so much about the water and marine life, and he's a wonderfully patient teacher when it comes to snorkeling. Our day included a couple of snorkel stops lunch at Foxy's on Jost, a tour of the back area of Foxy's, and a walk around town. We had a beautiful sail back to STJ. I agree that Capt.Phil is a great choice. I would also recommend Capt.Doug on Gypsy Spirit. Both are small boats, so you can tailor they day to what you wnat to do. You can also do a half day sail.

I'd also recommend Captain Phil, especially when you say you have a lot to learn. Captain Phil will snorkel with the group and spend time with those who need it. It's a 30ft boat with 6 passengers, Captain Phil and his mate (Tarn or Allison).

The full daysail includes 2 snorkel stops and lunch. also includes soda, water and beer throughout the trip. If your husband doesn't want to snorkel, he could hang out on top and catch some sun, and probably take a brief swim, if he chooses.

The focus is on the sailing and snorkeling; it's definitely not a party boat.

We've been out with him twice. Loved it so much both times that we're hesitant to try anyone else.

Thanx for the advice. So far it looks like Capt Phil and the sail to Jost. We are kinda "light-weights" when it comes to partying, so it's a good thing the emphasis is on snorkeling. This is fun and sooo addicting

you might want to try Rusty he has a trimaran that he sails out of great cruz bay The food that he servers isn't much but his boat is the fastest Ive been on so you can go longer dis. and quite resenible.

I am trying to find a daysail for 8 adults and am having a hard time, most only take 6.

Hi Rusty can only take 6 most of the captains have what is called a 6 pack lic. We had eight last dec. we went on Breath had a great time the places this boat had been and the stories they told where great. the crew snorkeled with us and showed us things that I had never seen before they even caught a lobster and made it to go withour lunch.

My family had a great time with Paul and Vicki on the Outlaw last summer. At 55', its one of the few boats that can accomodate 8 people comfortably (they can have up to 12). We did the all day "sail Around St. John" which included time to stop and snorkle during a relaxing lunch. their web site is www.sailoutlaw.com.

i also recommend capt phil the Wayward Sailor! we have done snorkel trips with him several times and each time is more unique than the other. his knowledge of marine life and his true love for it always comes out. you won't be disappointed.

Gypsy Spirit is it for the guy who wants to do a little more than lay on deck and bounce. Capt. Doug gives an awesome sail, with lunch and hands-on sailing lessons around the island of St. John. And what a great host, has been sailing the waters there for 20 years and he knows lots about the sea life. You'll be sailing circles around those other boats.

We went with Captain Phil last Tuesday and had a great time (detail in the much anticipated trip report ) He has great stories, educates you about the reef and the critters and gets in the water with you to show you things first hand.

We also did a powerboat charter with VI Fly Away Charters out of Coral Bay (pick up in Cruz Bay) with Captain Truman and had a great day despite the weather. (www.viflyawaycharters.com)

I also vote for Captain Phil. His mate, Tarn, is so interesting to talk with. We have done the 1/2 day sail and snorkel, full day sail and snorkel, and the trip to Jost. Enjoyed them all. Captain Phil starts you snorkeling at whatever level you are able to handle, but customizes for everyone on board. In February, he taught us to free dive. He always gets in the water with his passengers.
