Day 3: Sunday, Bloody Sunday

Post by mbw1024 »

Today's title dedicated to my friend Jerseyboy 8)

It's Sunday...what's one to do but have bloody mary's at Sun Dog!
It was also check out day at Gallows so we got up, got organized and headed to the desk in the lobby area. Took care of our bill and asked that they send someone to get our bags and hold them until we could get our car, hopefully around noon. No problem!

We set off in to town for brunch. We made a quick drop in to STJ Spice to say hello to Ruth and Ron and headed off to Mongoose. I have not been to Miss Lucy's so I can't compare but the brunch at Sun Dog is great, the food is fabulous and I can't believe they are churning it all out of that little closet they work in! Granted there isn't the view the Miss Lucy's provides but there's plenty of good people watching around Mongoose ;)
We weren't planning on it but we ended up at Sun Dog twice for brunch and both days we ordered off the specials board but there are many interesting things on the regular brunch menu. Note to JMQ the Bailey's French Toast is on the regular menu in case you are looking for it again :)

We, of course, started out with Bloody Mary's (bloody mary's, mimosa's and screwdrivers are all $4 until noon on Sunday)

YUM

I had the Puff Pastry special which this day was filled with eggs, sausage, peppers, onions and I'm sure some sort of cheese but I forget now. Delicious!

Charlie had the special of the day eggs benedict. This day it was shrimp and spinach EB. I'm not a big fan of this dish normally but this was excellent. The hollandaise was really excellent and I think that is what normally turns me off of this dish.

After more bloody mary's we decided it was time to move on. We popped in and out of a few stores in Mongoose and then headed to STJ Car Rental to check on our vehicle. They had a car ready for us so we were off in our White Wrangler back to Gallows to pick up the bags.
While Charlie loaded up at car I called Cimarron to see when we would be able to check in to Villa Capiz. Someone was checking out that day so Crystal, our greeter, advised me that the house would not be ready until 3. I'm sure we could have taken our bags up but truthfully I prefer to see the house when it's ready for me. So we agreed to meet Crystal around 3pm in the Starfish parking lot. Perfect. We left Gallows and took a few spins through town to get our feet wet again with the driving and then we did our chores! Mixology, Pine Peace, Chelsea Drugs, Starfish Gorumet and then Starfish Market. All this took us just until about 3 and Crystal arrived in the lot. I was standing near the entrance to the Marketplace waiting for her but somehow she missed me but found Charlie in the parking lot!

We followed Crystal to Villa Capiz out the South Shore Road. I'm good on that road up to where Bongo is but then it's uncharted territory for me. I know we went out that way last year but I don't remember it. It's not a bad drive until you hit Gifft Hill Rd. Then it's up up up. I was pretty prepared for the drive except for that last switch back   When I saw Crystal's tires spinning I was holding my breath! Spin spin spin... up she goes and now it's our turn! Spin and we were up. WHEW! Followed through the gate and down the drive where I caught my first glimspe of the view. That makes me happy! The cleaning person was still there but just finishing up. Got the tour from Crystal, which I must confess, I never really hear all the instructions from the greeter because I'm too busy wondering when they are going to leave so I can jump in the pool!
Luckily, Crystal was brief, the cleaning lady wrapped up and it was just us! WOO HOO!!!!!!!

We were literally in the midst of pulling on bathing suits when I heard a car on the gravel outside our bedroom door. Considering we are behind a gate with a keypad this was slightly alarming! Charlie pulled on some pants and went to check it out. POOL MAN! :) He was in and out in 5 minutes and we were in the pool as soon as he left. Ahhhhhhhhhhh... heaven.

But. Coudln't hang around too long as we were due at the Beach Bar.

The Villa - at first I wasn't sure I liked it but it definitely grew on me. In fact we spent more time at the villa this year then last. I don't think that had to do with the house per se but just less of a need to "do things" on our second trip.
I must say, I am in love with the view from Gifft Hill. That will be evident if you view my full photo album when it is ready. The drawback to this house, for me, is the 2 level living. Inevitably whatever I wanted at a given time was on the level that I was not on! But it really wasn't a big deal. We would rent this villa again if the situation was right. Next trip if it is just Charlie and I we would likely try another place but if we take my 15 year old niece this house would be considered.
Here's the first picture I took of the view and this isn't even one of the good ones!

So after the quick dip in the pool we were off to the Beach Bar. I know you've seen some other pictures of this gathering so I will just add mine here without further comment. It was a fun gathering!

We headed back to the villa around 7 I think. We had picked up a roasted chicken at Starfish so that was dinner along with a salad of Josephine's mixed greens. Simple and delish. But before that we enjoyed cocktails and cheeses on the deck while gazing at the view.

Excellent!

I know what you mean about that last switchback - took my breath away the first time, and had me a little intimidated the next several times as well.

We went "down the hill" almost exclusively the first dew days to avoid it, but since I didn't know my way around too well at first, as soon as we passed Starfish we knew that we were going back to the villa via the "highway"!

It is a great view from up there. Is Villa Capiz just below Cielo Vista. I know the driveways are next to each other, but it looked to me like VC was further off of the road where CV is just a few feet from Gift Hill Rd.

Can't wait to read more - keep 'em coming MB!

ok can someone set me straight? I always think it is Gifft - am I wrong?

Augie, VC and CV are next door to each other but VC is down a rather long driveway where as CV sits up closer to the road. It was a few days before I realized I could see CV through the trees at the top of the drive.

I find, when on-island, alcohol tends to enhance the food flavors!

Sun Dog is not really that good, so you all should continue to get your brunch and lunch elsewhere, or else I'll never get a seat there again.

RIGHT. What he said. Actually someone correct me on this if I am wrong. When I was there last year I thought that there were only the 5 or 6 tables that go along side the cigar store and out towards the parking lot. Now it looks like there are more tables down the stairs from the bar outside the 2 stores on the right hand side. The one store is called Bambaloa or something like that. I know I have that name WAY wrong ;)
Maybe Pia can confirm if those tables are also part of Sun Dog's set up?

Another great Day!

Does Sun Dog do brunch everyday or just Sundays? Don and I love eggs benedict - definitely need to give this a try.

I was smarter today; snuck in your TR BEFORE I ate lunch (although my chipotle chicken salad pales in comparison).

Great pics - thanks

Just Sundays, 10-2 I think. There is traditional Eggs Benedict on the regular menu but it seems they offer a special one in additional to that.

Great report, Mary Beth. I think I can skip the first couple of days of mine because you have it covered  . I don't remember if those tables were there or not last year, but they are part of Sun Dog Cafe. We weren't sure if we were going to get a table when we met Les and Pia for lunch and the Sun Dog staff said that those were their tables as well.
