phone cards

Post by naturegirl »

I never used a phone card before but since I have vorizon and don't want huge roaming charges can someone tell me how they work. Also, we will be there for about two weeks so how what monetary amout should we have on it. We will be calling home (NJ) everynight for about 15 minutes and calling during the day for messages.

My Verizon cell phone did not get a signal on STJ. I would buy a phone card and use it with the villa land line phone. How much to have on it I don't know...but I think Rick G knows.

Naturegirl,
As much as you plan to use the phone while down there you may want ton consider buying a pre-paid ATT phone.

This one at wall mart is only $20.00 looking at the ATT web page its $1.00 a day and ten cents a minute. ATT/Cingular works fine in the Cruz Bay area and almost all of St Thomas. The USVI is included in their nationwide calling area.

Nature Girl,
Do you have an ATT store near you? The price may not be as cheap as wal mart in the ATT store but it would be worth a call. They have them on ATT web page in that price range but I don't think you would have time to get one shipped. If the store has one in stock you could get it the same day.

Naturegirl,

I have had Verizon for several years and I do get a limited signal on the island. I will only use the cell phone for very important calls i.e. meeting up with people, contacting villa reps etc. the rest of the calls are on pre-paid cards. I bought a "Rechargeable" MCI card at PriceClub (bulk discount store in my area). The card was $20 for 670 minutes, yep less than 3 cents per minute. I've recharged it once and I use it for all of my long distance calls if I remember to. As long as you use it from a villa it's minute for minute on my card, 30 cent surcharge if using a pay phone. Your 15 minute call home would be 45 cents, If you are a talker 1 hour equals less than a dollar :)

Rule of thumb with the cell, if I can see St Thomas I can usually get a call out on Verizon. Bourdeau Mtn and Coral Bay side is dead, however I remember making calls from Maho, Cinnamon, and Trunk.

Take Care,
