Rental cell phones?

Post by susan & herb »

I know cell phones are discussed often as to reception etc. I thought I had finished my planning ie, plane, villa car but then I started thinking we are staying on Coral Bay side of island which means we won't have cell phone service unless we go into Cruz Bay. That has been our experience the last 3 times we were on island. We have Verizon which is useless past say the Westin Hotel.
The only reason that cell service is so important is that my son, as my husband likes to say, the President of the company needs to be able to get in touch with him. If we are at the villa it's fine, but last year as we headed to dinner in Cruz bay and started getting service, all the calls from the day started coming in. Not a good way to enjoy dinner!

Can we rent a phone anywhere on island that will give us service in the Coral Bay area? Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Verizon is our at home carrier too and we don't use it on STJ because it's not always reliable so we bought an AT&T Go Phone and it worked out great. It's a pay as you go phone. I recommend it.

I'm not sure that I went to the most remote places of that side of the island, but I had no trouble getting service (via AT&T/Cingular) at Vie's, Skinny's, across Centerline Road. There were parts of North Shore Road where I didn't get service, but no one in our group did.

I understand actually what you mean. Sometimes the very job that pays for the STJ trip doesn't allow you to completely disconnect.

We used an ATT/Cingular go phone in February. Reception was good enough (some dead zones but nothing too bad) in town but not good enough to encourage too many calls!
