parking the car
I want to avoid getting ticketed while on vacation. I understand that it is easy to park illegally on StJ and not realize it, especially at places where there is not a parking lot like Maho. Where and for what reasons might I be most cautious in parking other than making sure that the vehicle is completely off the road? Also, can I be parked at a National Park beach or parking lot after dark or is there a "closing time"?

To be safe you could stick to those beaches with designated parking like Trunk, Hawksnest, and Cinnamon. For Maho (one of my personal favorites), try parking at the Maho campground and walking from the camp to the beach. I'm sure they wouldn't mind, especially if you grabbed something to eat there or visited the gift shop (they have great handmade glass items). There's a nice path to the beach. However, it could be a little steep for older folks or really young kids. Ask someone for directions if you can't find it.
