Where MUST I have cash?
Where MUST I have cash?
Trying to figure out where all the funds are going to be for this upcoming trip and trying to decide where I need to pay cash. Anyone care to assist? I know I can go to an ATM but still need to determine how much to put where before I go
CASH
taxis - land and water
general tipping $$
Trunk Bay
Gas stations?? Yes or no on this, I forget.
JVD ferry - yes?
Where else?

Re: Where MUST I have cash?
I think this will help. Most places took credit cards; I was surprised.
taxis - land and water -- every taxi I took only took cash
general tipping $$ -
Trunk Bay - It's $4 for a day or $10 for a week if you plan to go there more than once (we didn't because of the cruise ship schedule and the fact that there are 33 beaches to choose from)
Gas stations?? The gas station near Cruz Bay takes credit cards now
JVD ferry - The Jost ferry through Inter-island $50 does take credit cards
Baked in The Sun was a cash-only operation, which surprised me, but like I said most places take plastic. (Although many people use cash for ease to split checks and such.)

When we went to Skinny Legs they took credit cards, but the waitress asked us (and reminded us a couple of times) to leave her tip in cash.
I figured that St.John Car Rental was the only place on island that would take American Express, but Starfish Market and Chelsea Drugstore did also.
Cash for taxis, ferries, and some of the roadside food vendors.
We ended up using less than half of the cash we took, but we didn't eat out all that much either.

Come see us!
If you're planning any day trips, you may want to check their websites in advance (even if you book on island). I know Captain Phil does not take credit cards - cash, check or traveler's checks.
Not sure if Caps takes cc; but at $1 a beer, cash is quicker.
I can't think of any restaurant or shop (in Cruz Bay anyway) that didn't take credit cards. We use the cc as much as possible to build the miles for the next trip.
enjoy,
