Public Library on STJ

Post by flip-flop »

I know that there is a public library, but I have a couple of questions.

1) Where is it?

2) Can us tourists take out books?

3) Is there a selection of kids books?

I think it would be educational and fun for my little girl to go to the library and get books (also will help us in our endeavor to pack lighter) but would surely understand if they didn't want us to.

Since I am being a delinquent mama and pulling her out of school for this trip I do want to be sure to do something educational. I know she will learn WAY more on this trip than in class.

Anyway, I digress. Anyone help me?

Thanks!

I don't know about the library deal, but wanted to add that I take my son out of school a few times a year for short trips. I help him write a short report about the place we visited and send pictures in with it. I feel less guilty this way! The teachers and students really enjoy it. Your little girl could have a kick-a$$ show & tell day!!

We didn't plan it this way intentionally. We were supposed to go last November when she was gloriously commitment free. ALL of that has changed with kindergarten.

She's a smart cookie so I have no concerns really but I did dread telling the teacher, who was by the way awesome about it. I definitely plan to do some projects with her while we are there for sharing in class.

There is a public library on STJ. They do not allow anyone without a card to take out books. They have a childrens room on the bottom floor where there is also a museum. There has been talk of it closing due to much needed repairs. It's a tall building on a hill just past town on the right side of the street.

I'm not familiar with the "rule" of checking out books, sorry but to find the library you exit Cruz Bay as if going to the Westin, and when you are on the one way road you turn right where the small sign is for the Animal Shelter (next street past the right turn for St John Inn if that helps) and it is at the end of that road on the left.

It is a beautiful old white building with stairs leading up to the entrance.

Have fun if you visit, and they do have a childrens section :)

There are also places around on the island where you can do the take a book/leave a book thing. I've seen stacks at Deli Grotto, Skinnys, and Island Blues off the top of my head.

The shop at the National Park Dock has a good selection of educational books on various sealife that would be appropriate for your daughter's age if you wanted to buy something.
It's like looking in your soup and finding a whole different alphabet.

Thanks. I am definitely going to the Visitors shop. I have never made it there in all of our trips!

I noticed this on http://www.varlack-ventures.com/vvfiles ... .htm#books

"Island Book Exchanges
Many of the island's restaurants and markets have shelves full of used books. Feel free to take a book or two and if you have a book you have finished reading drop it off at one of the locations.

Some Coral Bay locations: Calabash Market, Skinny Legs, Take a Break Deli
Cruz Bay Locations: Larry's Landing "

Of course you would have to have books with you to exchange
