Airline help/JFK, Newark to STT
Hi everyone,
Well yesterday we decided to make our plane reserv. with AA for our May trip using our freqeuent flyer miles. We normally use them to go first class, but don't have enough this year. We always take the non-stop out of JFk. Well guess what, no frequent flyer tickets available!! All gone!!! Won't even go into the discussion my husband had with 2 supervisiors and was then told he could contact customer service, notice I said contact, because we were told there is no "phone number" for customer service. You need to e-mail them or write. Great CUSTOMER SERVICE!!
Well, one of our choices is to go thru Puerto Rico on AA with an hour between planes to STT. Guys, will this work? We are planning carry one, but have not done this routine to STT. The other choice, is to buy regular tickets on direct flight and upgrade to first class using our miles. I was really counting on using our miles to pay for the trip. This only adds to total cost as we found out our cousins who were suppose to go with us in May, are getting divorced!!! It's amicable, but we will not have company for our trip. Would appreciate thoughts

An hour is plenty of time in STJ, as long as your plane is on time. The airport is smallso you will have no problems and because you are carrying on, you don't need to worry about losing your luggage (which has happened to me 4 times in SJU)
You will most likely be on a small plane so they will valet your carry on when you get to the plane, but you will get it right back as soon as you get off the plane and not have to worry about waiting for it to come out.

Before Continental added a direct flight from EWR to STT, we always used to go AA (Eagle) thru SJU. I know that for Saturdays, there are continual AA flights from SJU to STT so if you miss yours you can get on the next one. Same for your luggage, if it doesn't make your AA flight to STT, it'll most likely be on the next flight.
Have you looked at the direct Continental flights out of EWR?
To answer your original question, an hour will be close but doable because as XIG said, SJU is not that big.

We ususally end up doing Newark to STT going through SJU with an hour or so between the inter-island fights and will doing this again this Thanksgiving. Most times we have carry on - though sometimes we have checked too and we have never had a problem making the connection. In fact, one time we were late getting off the ground in Newark and we thought for sure we would never make our connextion out of SJU but they held the flight going into STT for those on flights needing to make the connection. I think you'll be fine.

Thanks Long Valley. I work at Morristown Memorial Hospital!
We are really spoiled going direct out of JFK. We usually stay over at the airport to avoid hassle in am. Guess we will have to think seriously about San Juan stop over as long as you think it won't be too much of a hassle. Is it a small plane to STT?

JFK/STT/EWR
As the non stop JFK-STT does not run on weekdays this time of year, we will be doing JFK-SJU-STT next Monday. When we have to make a stop on the way to STT, we usually travel through Miami, but on this trip we noticed that the SJU-STT flight segment is on a 757, not a smaller American Eagle plane so we grabbed it. We also have about an hour to make our connection in San Juan so we are keeping our fingers crossed.
Had we taken the JFK-MIA-STT route, we would have been able to use our FF miles when we originally booked this trip last April, but on a flight that arrived at 9:05 PM. There were no seats available on the JFK-SJU connection even though we were traveling on a Monday. We were able to use the FF miles on the non stop JFK-STT flight both ways last August, and that allowed us our "extra" trip this year.
Guess AA is tightening up.
