RickG - Concordia?

Post by onthelake »

RickG,

I was reading the 'other' forum and you mentioned you were stopping at Concordia. We'll be staying in a studio there over Thanksgiving weekend and I can only find limited info. Could you give us a little report when you get back?
I see you are traveling with a red-head ... they are trouble, ya know  As you probably guessed I'm a red-head, too!!!

Thanks
Pam

I always say "Red on top, fire in the ... heart!"

I wrote about the Concordia dining pavilion in May. I hope to get back by this time around. I love having a spot to stop on that side of the island. I'll report back.

Its a nice spot and my kind of place. Private toilets and no pesky A/C. I loved Maho Bay Campground. My girls hated walking to the toitey. The dining pavilion has very dramatic views from East to West on the South Shore overlooking Drunk Bay, Rams Head and Salt Pond.

I find the biggest difference, for me, is the fact that I have to bring a towel to Maho and Concordia. This literally doubles the size of my clothing bag! Of course, I still fit it all into a carry-on knapsack.

Cheers, RickG

Thanks

We will bring our towels and flashlights .... that was a recommendation form Concordia. Can't wait to be 'on island' and we love Coral Bay area, so I'm sure the studio will be great.

Have a great Trip!!!

I think I seen the interior of Concordia's cabin on Youtube. That might give you some help.Did Concordia send you a map of their property? I know Maho did about 2 years back.It was very helpful. This is a pic of the a cottage just above the Yoga area.ParafinsImage

Definitely don't forget the flashlight for either. We did & it was a challenge & a bit spooky finding our studio at Maho in the dark!

parafins,
No we didn't get a map or really any info. Just a one page list of dos and don'ts and the flashlight thing.
We went to Salt Pond several times last trip, so we kinda know were the road is to turn in, but thats about it. I do have there phone number and they said someone will be there till 8pm.

Do you know if this is the tent or the studio? As you can see we're pretty much going in blind. That's what happens when the airfare drops and you are obsessed with St John and will do anything to be back.

Thanks (again)

ccasebolt,
Wow ... someone that's actually stayed there - this is great.

So how do we get there? We know we turn left before the parking for Salt Pond, but that's about it.
How are the Studio's - big enough for two. We really will just be sleeping there, but it still would be nice to know your opion. Did you like them?

Also, how are the stair? and anything we should know ahead of time or extra stuff to bring?

Thank you so much :)

What kind of studio will you have? We've had both a small w/pull-out couch & kitchenette, and a 1-BR loft w/full kitchen. The small one is quite roomy with a large deck and absolutely HUGE bathroom. The 1 BR loft is big enough for 4 adults. The full kitchen in the loft is fully equipped with a full-sized fridge, stove, and even a dishwasher. The kitchenette had a smaller fridge, stovetop (no oven) and did not have a dishwasher. There is a coffee maker, blender, pots, pans, dishes, etc. in both studio types.

Concordia is really not too hard to find as long as you're not trying to do it for the first time at night. Before the Salt Pond lot, there is a left turn off the main road that forks to the right and left; you will bear right. Besides the Concordia sign, there's not much in the way of landmarks except a small shack or trailer-like structure at the turn, so just look for the sign. You've been in the area before, so you shouldn't have any problem.

You park above and descend the hillside to get to the studios, so the stair situation depends on where your studio is located. The lofts are higher on the hill, so are closer to the parking; smaller studios are a bit further down, and the pool is the furthest (but still high above Salt Pond Bay). You'll have a great view wherever you're located.

One more thing - I would recommend several smaller bags rather than a larger one. It is far easier to haul smaller bags up and down the stairs (big wheelie suitcases are right out!). They provide bath towels, but you'll want to bring some beach towels and a neat sheet. I can't think of anything else you'll need that hasn't already been mentioned.

I'm not sure which one we have but either would be fine ... as long as they have a blender that works.
:)

But you confirmed my fear ... we are getting there after dark. Our plain gets in 4:20 so ... we will probably get over there around 7:00pm - after dark.
So we turn left and bear right ... that helps and hopefully there will be some signs. I figure we'll just call them if we get lost.

Is registration near the parking? Do you have any photos?

Thanks for the info ... Glad to hear the view is good.
That is one thing we were counting on.

Hi,
Hubby and I stayed in a Concordia studio with full ocean view in May 2 years ago and loved it. It wasn't a huge room, but bigger than your typical motel room, and spacious enough for me who gets antsy with a small room. Ours had a nice sized kitchen (with a working blender), a double bed (might have been a queen), a big round dining table (good for piling up your junk), decent sized bathroom, and a nice wrap around porch with beautiful views out to Salt Pond. We ate breakfast every morning on the porch and enjoyed the peacefulness and sounds of birds there.

The kitchen equipment was not extensive, but adequate for us since we don't cook much and make simple meals when we do. They also had some grills along their lower boardwalk if you want to cook out. We would definitely stay there again, and are discussing a trip next fall there. Its not as nice and spacious as our stays in a villa, but the price is right.

The dining pavillion was not open when we were there. It will be nice to have that option as well. We stopped to see the pavillion when we were in STJ in May and it has a wonderful view. I hope it stays in business, given it is pretty far out there.

There are a lot of stairs - good advice not to have big old rolling suitcases to lug up and down (which we did). Definitely flashlights and extra batteries. We brought our camping headlamps, so we could have light hands-free while toting stuff. In addition to our suitcases, we had stopped at Starfish for groceries so we had lots of stuff to carry down.

We also arrived at dark, but the sign on the main road was obvious, and its not too far down the road until you see a little shack with a registration sign. You just park along the side of the road and walk down a few flights to a building marked registration. You probably should ask what the arrangements are in case you arrive after 8pm when they leave.

We had a good experience with the management there. The pull chain on our fan broke one night, and they fixed it the next day.

Be sure to walk up the road a little ways to the area where there is a bench overlooking the newer tent units. The view is out to Ram's Head and you see both sides and can hear the waves at Drunk Bay. We loved going up there and enjoying the view, the sounds and the breeze. Also a great spot for star watching at night. Look on the hillsides throughout the boardwalk area for the hermit crabs - there were tons of them. We gave them our vegetable scraps and they ate them right up. Nothing left in a couple of hours.

Hope you have a wonderful trip. Any other questions, please feel free to ask.

After dark won't that bad either. The left turn you'll be looking for is at the crest of a small hill, so that should help too. Just drive slow, and look or the sign - you'll be fine.

Registration is down by the pool, so don't unload the car until you have checked in. You'll be arriving after hours, so the office may not be open. If it is, I believe they will leave your packet outside the office door, but give them a call just to be sure - they are super nice people.

I have a few pics - they may not help too much, but they can't hurt right?

THANKS !!!

This forum is great ... I never thought you could just ask and someone would take the time answer your questions.

We are so looking forward to our trip and even have freinds that decided to meet us after the weekend (when we will be in our bigger place).

Yesterday I received a pre-provisioning order form from Concordia which is going to make this trip even easier.

Thanks again 8)
