Pre-trip obsession phase?

Post by sunlover »

I saw RickG called it "pre-trip obsession phase? I'm glad there's a name for it, because I am so in it! (just 10ish more days.....)

I was wondering, what do you all do to "prepare" before your trip? I'm hoping to get some specifics of your obessions so I don't feel like I'm the only crazy one out there....

Today I had a really hard time concentrating at work. I made a mistake and started looking at someone's vacation pictures. Oops. I couldn't stop looking at pictures, doing searches, printing out all of our confirmation numbers, etc.. Oi. Hurry up, Saturday!

You're down to 10 days. You definitely have an excuse for "pre-trip obsession"! I start way early!!!
1. Packing - For me, this can take a while because I don't want to overpack. In order to carryon only, you have to plan well, then pack well.
2. Load ipod
3. Check and recheck flight times. (You never know when they are going to change it on you.)
4. Check cruise ship schedules. You don't want to go to Trunk when there are lots of cruise ships on STT.
5. Get cash
6. Spend lots of time on VIOL! :D

I read the forum before I go to bed! Just in case I miss a tidbit.

I send my gang an email each day. Today it was SusanNJ's trip report. They don't read the forum, but are willing to party with the gang at the Beach Bar on Sunday.

I sneak to read the forum when I am work supposedly getting caught up before I go on travel. This week I'm supposed to finish three big projects. I may need to change the definition of "finish" on these.

I activated my first ever techi-ice tonight.

And, since its October, I keg the beer for the Real Ale Festival on November 17.

But, I don't check the weather report. MrB sends it real time!

Cheers, RickG

We leave the last week in Feb. I will:

Start thinking about shopping for needed clothes around Christmas. (toddler will surely need to go up a size by then)

January - Work on menus and shopping lists. We are taking a cooler and I want to have a few set meals and related shopping list prior to arriving. I will order the meats from the butcher one week prior and have them package and freeze.

I will start laying out the packing one month prior. This allows me to reduce the amount we are taking.

Final trip-planning party one month prior.

Now I have the box to worry about. So much to do, so much time to think about it....

RickG - I look forward to your review of the techi-ice. I am thinking of getting some for our Feb trip. (taking a cooler) and I know we would use it at home as well.

Someone on the forum put a helpful link to an ebay seller that had a good price. I soaked the sheets last night and they swelled up nicely. I had a wet diaper flash back, apparently its some kind of silica gel that soaks up the water a la nappy.

I like the idea of these guys for a beach cooler for sandwiches. The beer cooler for 6 people will be a 2-man lift. Actually, I'm bringing a small wheeled cooler as checked luggage with some food. Its way over kill, but since we were getting our vehicles on STT I decided what they hell. We will be checking luggage with this gang anywhere.

"Pre-trip obsession phase"

1) Get out suitcases a month early and throw "stuff" in as I think of it (this is why I overpack)

2) Make reservations with private taxi guy, water taxi, scuba, daysail, and anything else I know I want to do

3) Beauty stuff: go tanning, get hair done, get nails done, get waxed NOTE: I do this only so that I can apply for entry at Jorge and Rick's MILF bar

4) Make sure all electronics are charged and x-tra batteries are packed

5) Daydream of all the fun I'm going to have

6) Make arrangements to meet up with other forumites

7) Print out all confirmations and put them in carry-on

I know there is a ton more but I'm sure you get the jist of it

Two weeks ahead of time I get out the suitcase and I put clothes in it that I think we will need and then NOBODY is allowed to wear them.

Get out the snorkel gear and check it all out.

Start making lists. I'm obsessive with that.

Check the flight times about 5 times a day to see if they've changed.

Goof off at work and just look on the internet for what I want to do...print it out and start making a folder.

I'm making myself crazy right now just typing this, so I think I'll stop

Our weather is getting in the way of my pretrip obsession packing. (Not the obsessive thoughts, just the obsessive actions). Its the end of October and my daughter is still going to school in SHORTS. This needs to end.

I do have the guest bed covered with 4 piles: baby, girl, mama, and dad. It is actually not looking too bad. I have to print the packing list to make sure I am not forgetting anything!

My obsession will all things St. John started in January or February, and we're not going until December!

This obession has affected my relationships... last Friday during a wine-fueled euchre night, we got into a conversation about vacations. Turns out several of my neighbors have been there (long ago) but seemed to know less about the island than I do! (Not vacation research fanatics, apparently. And not forumites, which explains the problem.)

Just to make me nuts, they kept calling it "St. Johns", with emphasis on the "s". Funny how that really sounds just wrong to my ears.

Enjoy your obsession! There are far worse things to obsess over!

Since I had this trip planned before I went on my June trip, I have been in the obsession phase for over a year!
That's why I am here, I guess and the #5 poster! :D

RickG - gotta love that techni-ice. Great for the beach - wait until you try nuking it to keep hot foods warm - we've taken Reubens and burgers to the beach - yummmmmmmmm. BTW, I think that the sheet has to be frozen once and thawed before you can heat it - for some reason it can't go to heat directly from activation. Last trip I cut a strip and put it into a fold in my bandanna - a cooler head did indeed prevail at the beach that day. 8)
