13 years ago today my wife and I visited S.T.J. for the first time.It was our honeymoon and to this day i'm so glad we picked that little island. Both of us had never visited a tropical island before. The only thing tropical that we knew was reruns of Gilligan's Island!
"Back then" we used a travel agent to help plan our trip- you remember travel agents, don't you?We knew only of two hotels,The Hyatt, and Caneel Bay.We picked The Hyatt.I remember waiting for the Hyatt boat at the old Red Hook dock.I looked down to see fish in water that was so clear I could hardly believe my eyes.Little did I know of what was to come.We spent one week on S.T.J. and one more week on S.T.T.We wanted to give them both a try.On S.T.T. The Saphire Beach Resort was our choice.I recall looking over at S.T.J. and wishing we had spent both weeks there.Yes we liked Saphire Beach, but we just knew S.T.J. was the island for us.
For those of you that want to spend your honeymoon on St.John,You've made a good choice!Have a good day...

HELLO FROM MICHIGAN...
12 years ago June we also first set foot on St. John for our honeymoon too!
Did it without a travel agent, which was rather shocking at the time. It seems rather quaint that I actually picked up the phone to call the resort with questions.
One thing that hasn't changed, we are paying, almost to the dollar, the same to fly down now as our first trip in 1995, +/- $525.

It was 12 years ago July for us. We didn't use an agent, but I did buy a Fodors, and from that I chose Estate Concordia (new at the time and listed in Fodors!) and Caneel - we split the week between both places. We knew absolutely nothing about this destination that I had chosen (also our first tropical island), except to say that it sounded like our kind of place.
While at Estate Concordia, I picked up a dog-eared copy of "Feet Fins and 4 Wheel Drive" from the bureau in the room and started reading (and reading...). We used that book as our bible during the rest of our stay - and did we ever get hooked! Needless to say, although things have changed some over the last 12 years, it's still our kind of place... I now own a (newer) copy of FF&4WD which we take with us whenever we visit. Some things never change

10 years, and 12 trips for us, since we first sailed in the Islands. Our honeymoon, was also spent there.
I can honestly say that there is no where else I want to go, especially if it meant, not going to the Islands for a year.
Part of me, doesn't want our November trip to come, because we don't have another trip planned until Dec. 2008.

I'm a newbie to the forum AND the island. It's been 4 1/2 months since our first visit on our honeymoon and I'm literally counting down the days until the next one, on our 1st anniversary.
If there is a "down side" to discovering St. John, it's that I'm reluctant to use my precious vacation time to explore other places in the world. All I want to do is go back to my beloved island!

Thanks everyone.....
I enjoyed all of you comments, thank you.PA Girl,Your right, flights are cheaper now than years ago.I think we paid $400.00 plus back then. Casebolt,we used Fodors too!If we hadn't used that guide book we would have missed what S.T.J. had to offer. While staying at Gull Cottage back in 2000 I found a book in their library called "Off The Beaten Path" I liked it so much that I purchased one from the National Park Service. I now take that book with me every time I visit S.T.J. I will have to find a copy of "Feet,Fins, and Four Wheel Drive,i'm sure I would enjoy that too.
