Will Airlines Send Late Luggage to St John from St Thomas?
We have a late flight into St Thomas and just in case our luggage doesn't make the connection with us I'm wondering if the airlines (American in our case) will send it over to St. John. I highly doubt they would but just thought I'd check with those who know for sure. I'm not sure I'd trust them to do it even if they said they would. Thanks for any information.
Yes they will and they send it over via the car ferry and you have to meet them at the dock - they call you to let you know what time the ferry will be arriving (sometimes only a 20 min warning)
There is only one ferry that they use for "lost" luggage and if for some reason you are not there when they arrive they take it back to STT - at least that's what the delivery person told my Mother in Law when they delivered her "lost" luggage at 3pm the next day after it not being on that late night AA flight - pack a bathing suit in your carry on, or better yet remember my saying (along with most here) you only need carry on on STJ

US Air/Cape Air lost our bags in February (each pointed to the other as the responsible delivery party) and they did deliver the bags to the St. John ferry dock. The bags went missing on a terrible winter travel day and there were many, many people at the airport as well as at the St. John dock waiting for their bags.
Our frustration with the process was with the calling issue. There was no way we were going to hang around the house all day waiting for a call. There was a working answering machine but with Pia’s correctly described 20 minute warning, it did us no good as if you aren’t checking the machine within the window of opportunity, you miss out on the delivery.
On day 2, we were lucky to be in the house around 5 pm when the call came for bag #1 of 2. We rushed to the dock, only to wait about 2 hours and several ferries after the original promised ferry delivery. Only one of the two bags was on that particular ferry. Back home we drove. As we were walking in the door, the phone rings “bag on the way.” We ran back into town to retrieve the second bag. Huge pain in the you-know-what and as soon as dear son is old enough to tow his own little wheelie bag, we will be going carry-on only!

Now that I've read these posts, I'm definitely bringing a change of clothes and swimsuit in my carry-on (It's really just my beach bag and a backpack.)
Ever since the new rules, I check practically everything because I don't like to worry about what can and can't go in my bag. And I used to be a carry-on only traveler. It's sad, really.

It ended up being way more stressful than it should have been.
Bag #1 was my husband's. He packed nothing (may a pair of shorts) in a carry-on and was beside himself to not have his clothing and shoes. He wears 15s so he couldn't just run into the store for flip-flops.
Bag #2 was my mom's and was filled with their snorkel gear and her insane food items that she can't live without. (the bulk being a very specific kind of chocolate)
Let me just say there will not be a repeat performance next trip.

I actually had a differnt expoerince just this past summer. Someone, we are still not sure who, either Delta or the airprot sent it over with a delivery guy
on the people barge. Tipped him 5 bucks and he headed straight for Caps

None of our three bags made the connection in PHL (US Air) - and it wasn't even a tight connection! Thankfully I had a cell phone with me so I left that number with them so we didn't have to wait around. When we finally got the call (28 hours later!) we waited for the people ferry at Joe's Rum Hut I was so thrilled when our luggage finally arrived, I nearly hugged the delivery guy; instead I way over-tipped him. Lesson learned - next time shorts and a bathing suit in a small carry-on.

We all put a change of clothes and a bathing suit in our carry ons. No luggage was lost, but it was nice to go into the ladies room at STT and change out of my jeans and sweater into shorts and a tank top. Mr. Ksea and Mr. Ksea, Jr did the same. Only they went into the men's room! By that time our luggage was on the carousel for pick up. Next trip=carry on only. Shlepping those big bags around was a pain in the a$$.
