Here's the plan w/some questions

Post by asilk »

We arrive the first week in December. Other than a cruise ship stop, this is our 1st visit. For the last 5 years we have gone to Huatulco, MX. which is fantastic. We are ready for something new.

Staying at Estate Lindholm. Seems to have a good location & the amenities we need.

The agenda is AM hiking & lots of beach time. Rum in the afternoon sounds great.

Now for some questions. We plan on renting a dinghy for a day. Who is the best provider? How far can we reasonably expect to go on the north side of the island?

For a day trip to BVI, what is the best agenda? We are undecided between a day sail and a power boat trip.

We are not planning on renting a car. We drive enough as it is. If we take the bus to Coral Bay, what should our agenda be? Or should we even do this? We can be very happy taking cabs and exploring near by areas as well. Sometimes when you travel, you miss some things close by.

Thanks. This seems like a great board.

You'll absolutely love Estate Lindholm. If there was a place to stay where you could get away with not renting a car, this is it... You can easily walk to Cruz Bay and hike to a few nearby (beautiful!) beaches.

However, like most of the people on this forum, I'll urge you to rent a car even if just for one or two days. You'll miss so much if you don't. The bus does run to Coral Bay, but I've heard it's quite a wild ride, takes significantly longer than driving, and doesn't necessarily always run on schedule... (we had a friend who was stranded and had to hitchhike back). Plus, driving is a lot of fun and the vistas are beautiful.

Also, know that taxi costs can really add up. I know the rates are supposed to be standardized, but I can never figure them out. We've taken a taxi up the hill from Cruz Bay back to Lindholm, and been charged anywhere from $4 to $12 per person. Learned that one the hard way (always ask first). :)

As for a day trip to the BVIs, I'm sure lots of people on the forum can give you suggestions. Personally, we love the trip to Jost Van Dyke (and prefer a power boat to a sail b/c you get there faster, but the sails are wonderful as well). We used oceanrunners, but I can't seem to find the website..

I agree - renting a car is the way to go. It's not like driving at home - it's an adventure.

Rent a dinghy from Noah's Little Arks (right on the beach in Front of the Beach Bar - be sure to reserve it). You can explore all the beaches on the north shore to Waterlemon Cay (depending on the surf).

I prefer a power boat to Jost Van Dyke because of the speed also. Ask your capt. if the Bubbly Pool is working on JVD near Taboo - it's so much fun if it is.

Have a great trip!

I know that there are people that do not rent cars, but I truly think that there are so many places that are worth seeing that you can not get to via bus or taxi. That is not to say that you can't enjoy the island without a car, it just makes it that much more enjoyable.
If you take the bus to Coral Bay you will be fairly limited with options and you can indeed get stuck. While it is not common, it does happen and finding taxi's in Coral Bay is a crap shoot at best.

I recommend sailing to Jost, but that is because I love to sail. We sailed with Clark on White Wing and it was the best day I have had in a long time.

After 5 years of life on the island and trips back ins the past 7 years, I never rented a dinghy, so I can't help you there.

No matter what you decide to do,you will have a great time!

During our last trip to STJ, we gave a nice couple a ride out of Coral Bay who were stranded at the bus stop. They were tired, hot, and very appreciative to say the least.....

I have often seen folks get rides back to "town" from Coral Bay by just hanging around the bar at Skinny's and mooching a ride. There's almost always other tourists with room for two willing to help out. It's funny to me that people hitch rides, not by the traditional "thumb up," but by pointing with their finger towards the ground. I wonder if that's unique to USVI's, or common through out the Carribean?
When you find yourself in a hole.... quit digging.
