Jost Van Dyke Advice Needed

Hi, we are going to St John in November and are thinking of making our first trek to Jost. Our party is husband, me, my Mother (65), her sister, and our two daughters (8) and (2).
We are not bringing the 2 year old, are hiring a sitter for her. Is it worth bringing the 8 year old?
Any suggestions on who to use to get there? Ferry only runs Fri, Sat and Sunday so that will not work for us.

My daughters love catamaran day sails to the BVIs. It was a highlight of the trip. Ana, at 6, loved it. It depends on the kid, though.

My husband's 10 year old cousin went with us last month when we took the ferry over. He absolutely loved the whole day! At one point we did jokingly say that he might be the most responsible one since the painkillers were flowing. There were a few other kids there, but not many. It was a perfect day for us!

I think the 8 year old would love JVD. The beach is great, the water is shallow and calm. There are places to get drinks, snacks and ICE CREAM!
Try Capt. Bob (spreecaptbob@aol.com) he charges $75 pp to go to JVD from STJ. That's $25 more than the ferry...but I bet it's a lot more fun!

I'm with RickG, it depends on the kid. If our's was 8, I would absolutely take him but then again, he is already used to going to different places in the sense that a break in routine (food, transportation, etc.) doesn't upset him too much.

When we go to Jost, we always take the ferry. $40 round trip. Goes to Great Harbor, home of Foxy's.

From there you can take a local taxi to White Bay, home of The Sandcastle and Soggy Dollar Bar, The Birthplace of The Painkiller!

My advice to tourists is to get on a charter boat, which will take all the hassle out of the trip, give you drinks, probably stop for snorkle, give you lunch, etc. This is much more comfortable, easier, and pleasant.

Call ahead to one of the information services to see who is going and when. Here is one of them, located in a little kiosk at The Marketplace.

Absolutely take the 8 yr old! My kids had a blast snorkeling in White Bay (near Soggy Dollar) since our captain Kevin with Born to Rhumb told them that a previous customer found $50 in the bay (people lose money all the time since there's no dock there). Also Soggy Dollar has hammocks and this great ring game. Often near Foxy's there's a beach dog hanging around too. Yes! It was the highlight of their trip!

I have to agree, young kids will love Jost .We took my son and it was the highlight of his trip . Over at Foxys the beach dog found my son . He swam with him the whole time we were there. I have the cutest pics of the dog riding on my sons back while he swam.The only down fall is now my son wants a dog just like the one he saw at Foxys . It was a great day and look forward to returning again in July.

We met Taboo while on Jost last time also. He was at Ivan's and when we got up to leave, so did he. he led the way on the trail and kept looking back to see if we were coming. It was so cute. I have pics if I ever learn how to post them!
