Rum and Beer Recommendations?

Post by minnjim »

When we go to Mexico it was Sol for beer and Don Julio for tequila. Can anyone suggest some local rums and beer brands?

I think that most folks are drinking Cruzan rum. I'm not much of a beer drinker, but I know there is Caribe and the more I read about the Virgin Islands Pale Ale, the more I see a trip to The Tap Room in my future.

The only local beer I have had is Virgin Islands Pale Ale.
As far as rum goes, I like Cruzan dark, Cruzan light, Cruzan coconut, Cruzan mango, Cruzan pineapple, Cruzan vanilla ....
Enjoy!

Some people drink Pusser's Rum - I am partial to Cruzan though.

Carib all the way for me - have to try VI Pale Ale though - just really always seem to want Carib.

beer and rum

You are coming to the rum capital of the world.

The best rum is, of course, pusser's. Hearty and dark. The base of the painkiller. You normally can't find Pusser's on the mainland U.S., but it is plentiful here. And not too bad price-wise. Hint, make sure the bar is giving you a painkiller with Pusser's, and not some cheaper brank, like (ugh) Paradise Gold. Look at their website at Pusser's

Or, you can get Myers's, which is a little sweeter than Pusser's. Mix it with oj and add a cherry and maybe a squirt of lemon. Optional touch of pineapple. Yummy.

Cruzan Dark is fine. Cruzan also makes an expensive rum with a 5 on the label.

Whatever you buy, it will be cheaper than you are used to. For example, I get Cruzan dark for $4-5 per fifth.

St. John Pale Ale is a typical minibrewery beer. Got some taste to it. You might also like Caribe. Loads and loads of choices all over the island. Not too much draft, so go to Mongoose and hit the microbrewery. And while you're there, you might as well get a draft of their summer ale as well. St. John Brewers

I think Carib is very similar to Corona. I've seen it being served with and without a lemon or lime. I personally like it very cold and without any fruit. Enjoy!

I'm a fan of the Cruzan Amber, Mt. Gay and Goslings. Pussers I find has too much fusel alcohol. If I'm going that route I like something more artisanal like the Annapolis Rum from Callwood's on Tortola. If you stumble across any Rhum Agricole from Martinique or Guadolope go for it. Mt. Gay Extra Old is a great sipping rum.

On beer, the Virgins are a little tough on people who love good craft brewed beers. The guys from St. John Brewers have done a good job and their own beers and the Shipyard beers on draft at Mongoose Junction in Cruz Bay. You can find Sierra Nevada Pale Ale. The Foreign Extra Stouts are fun. Personally, I really enjoy the Presidente for a light crisp beer. We used to drink a lot of Red Stripe, but the quality has not been high the last few years. Carib in cans is nice for the beach.

A lot of these beers get stored warm for a good while. If they are exposed to light they get skunky. Rum is a safer bet. I do drink more beer than anything else.

Cheers, RickG
