Help me choose a hike

Post by liamsaunt »

I am starting to think about what I want to do when we are down in a couple of weeks, and I have decided that we should try another hike. I am only going to add one hike, because I think that is all that John will tolerate.

I have a couple of criteria: First, I don't want to do a hike we've already done. So, that rules out Ram Head, Reef Bay, the trail to Little Cinnamon, and Lind Point/Peace Hill. (I don't really consider the Leinster trail to be a hike, we'll definitely be going out there at least once).

Also, it can't be too hard. I know that there's a new viewing platform off the Caneel Hill trail, but there is no way I am hiking up there to check it out! I am on vacation and I am planning on being lazy. It has to be hikeable in tevas, because I am not bringing closed toe shoes. Also, ideally there would be something interesting at the end, like ruins, or a beach.

So, with this criteria in mind, if you could only choose one hike, which would it be?

Also, somewhat related, have any of you gone on the NPS-guided bird walk at the salt pond behind Francis? I remember reading about this but can't find any information on the NPS site.
It's like looking in your soup and finding a whole different alphabet.

One that you might consider is the Cinnamon Bay Trail - I really like this trail and if you want it to be "easy" you could catch the $1.00 bus from Cruz Bay, get off at the start of Cinnamon and just go downhill (about 40 mins) and because it is downhill it is easy :) You can then just cross the street and you will be at Cinnamon Bay and therefore easy to catch a cab back to town or Caneel if you don't want to spend the day at Cinnamon

My favorite hike is from the Beach Bar to the Gecko Gazebo at Mongoose. Those stairs can be rough!

We are thinking about the Brown Bay trail this year. Maybe even finishing the hike to the horn instead of stopping at tektite.

Yea, yea...really have to agree with XIsland on the hike thing...you could do a harder hike climbing up to Zozo's bar all the way at the top...the incline is tough, but worth it!!!

As I recall, there are several steps leading up to the Banana Deck.
Seriously, Im not a hiker, but I do want to get to some of the points we missed last time by not hoofing it!

We have wanted to visit Trinidad Charlie for the past two trips but haven't made it so far. I included the link below, the website mentions walking tours.

I second Brown Bay. Good snorkeling, quiet beach and cool ruins.
I also like any hike that ends at the Beach Bar.

We are not going this year, so I'm jealous. :(

The Johnny Horn Trail from Leinster Bay to Brown Bay is very cool. You get great views down the Francis Drake Channel of the BVIs. It would be nice to hit Waterlemon Cay early and then head over to Brown Bay and back. Its definitely all Tevas all they way.

I've been wanting to check out the L'Esperance and Great Seiban trails. http://stjohnbeachguide.com/Trails/trails_home.html

Our group for Halloween are NOT early risers. I may try to pop over to the Great Seiban trail while they are snoozed and be back for breakfast. I always like to fit in something that I've never done before on island. I'd like to pop down to Reef Bay as well.

Cheers, RickG

This is a great topic liamsaunt! I am taking it all in.
We are going with a group of late sleepers too in June. I am trying to see what we will fit in early, before we meet up with everyone else for lunch. I am planning to follow Rick's guidelines for groups, having an "early group" and a "late group", meeting up for lunch and the rest of the day. I'm looking for moderate hikes, with beautiful views and scenery ... and not too long. It looks like you all have mentioned some definite possibilities. Thanks!

I would not recommend the Johnny Horn it's a killer especially if you want something not too difficult (I refuse to do it)
Don't forget if you see a man with 2 barky dogs on the Brown Bay it's hubby as he walks it every morning with them - puppies are harmless just barky - call them by their names and freak them out, black one is Coqui (Coki) and they grey spotted one is Tiki :)

Just another vote for Brown Bay. I really enjoyed the part of it that I did back in May. I know the entire thing to JH is difficult, but just into Brown Bay and back is nice. And, there's parking! :)
