JVD Ferry - how long is the ride?

Post by martini girl »

For those of you who've taken the ferry from STJ to Jost, how long is the ferry ride?

I can't recall exactly; but I'm sure it was less than an hour. Ali~

We just went last month and it was about 35-40 minutes. With the gorgeous views, it goes pretty quick!

Took that Bucket o' Bolts ferry August 25.
Indeed, 35-40 minutes, nice ride, nice views...

I concur. :) Even with customs, 45 minutes. That was low season, however.

Actual time moving across the water: about 45 minutes. Waited one hour for Ferry to leave STJ and one hour for Ferry to Dock at STJ on the return. We sat in the hot sun waiting for a "parking place" at the dock.

Is it typical to wait like that for the ferry to park or is that an unusual circumstance?

Also, how early do you need to arrive before the ferry actually leaves?

We never timed it, but I can tell you that it goes quick. We always sit on the top level and enjoys the views! ksea, sounds like you had some bad luck that day :( . You just never know with the ferry system. It can always be something  . We have done the ferry route to JVD three times and have had decent luck. Once we left late and another, we had to clear customs on West End Tortola before going to Jost which added time to the trip. I think their customs building wasn't open. Last trip, the ferry to VG was cancelled and a couple was trying to get to their homeymoon. They had to do some creative ferry/taxi hopping to get there. The ferry to JVD leaves at 8:30. You need to get there by 8:00 to but tickets and fill out customs forms.
Going "home" again October 26th!

Yes I think we just had some bad luck that day. We arrived at the STJ dock at 8am and the lady at the ticket desk said "we dont open til 8:30". She did, but the ferry didnt leave til about 9:00. We went on a Friday. I would do it again, everyone loved White Bay!
