Taxi to Red Hook from the airport should be about $15 per person, tip included. I have heard that private taxi's are a $75 minimum one way.

We have never used a private taxi on our 5 trips to STJ so I can't say if that is a better deal.

With a regular taxi van you may have to wait to fill up to 10 people before you leave the airport. You may have to drop people off at other locations before you get to Red Hook.

If you are willing to pay more for a private taxi to get you to Red Hook with no delays, then go for it!
I've got 2 tickets to paradise~Pack your bags we'll leave tonight!

We paid $160 for 4 adults and 1 teenager. We had 10 bags total and the $160 included the tip. That's an average of $32.00 pp.

We don't book a private taxi ahead of time-- but we usually have a taxi driver at the airport take "just us" "directly" to Red hook. It costs us $90 total for two people(no charge for bags). It also cost $90 when we did this with four adults (no charge for bags either - even though we had four carry on bags, plus purses and stuff)

We've also done the shared taxi thing (b/c we were assured we were going directly to redhook) and were charged 18 per person plus $2 per bag (even though we only had 2 carry-on items with us.

It's never clear how they figure out the prices when the taxi is full -- but perhaps they don't charge for bags if you effectively "charter" your own taxi. Maybe they just charge you the flat $90 fee.

Oh my goodness, I hope Ksea and Sunlover are talking about roundtrip!
About $15 each (one way)is right. If you can get a private taxi to take all 4 of you for $75, I would consider it.
In all reality, a private taxi saves you about an hour at best. What's the rush? I have seen hotels and residential areas of STT I never would have seen if I went private taxi.
So if you get a good price on private, go for it. Otherwise, many fabulous vacations have begun with the basic 10-12 person ride.

Our price was one way. The taxi driver was not too forthcoming with info when we asked the price. Our party and the others in the van were really confused!
I really dont remember how she arrived at our bill...but we just paid it and walked away scratching our heads.

We paid $15 per person, bags included, one way to Red Hook. This was for parties of 4 (2005), 6 (2006), 5 (2007)
