Rave: Body Deli & the Nose Knows!

Post by Gromit »

Seeing this story http://www.on-stjohn.com/ on the Body Deli reminded me of why I fell in love with this place a couple of years ago.

Flip Flop and I are spa super-freaks. We also *love* body products. We're always on the lookout for fresh smelling and unique spa-esque additions to our cosmetic closets. Recent find for Grapefruit lovers: Fresh's Hesperides!! But I digress...

Last time we were on STJ together we had a massage therapist come to the villa to give massages to everyone who wanted one. This was perfect since we had a beautiful villa and it was easier to coordinate than everyone piling in and heading to a spa.

Flip Flop is a sucker for a good body scrub. (BTW for the ladies and anyone concerned with getting a really good tan: I highly recommend getting rid of any dead skin BEFORE you start doing some serious tanning. The result is healthy skin and a nice even tan). A good body scrub followed by a decent one hour massage is also a good way to get out the kinks from your travel day and to start your vacation off right!

ANYWAY, the therapist used this amazing Yuzu Body scrub and body butter to follow up with the scrub. It was such a fresh and unique smell we practically pinned him down until he fessed up on where he bought the stuff. Turns out it wasn't a big mystery: The Body Deli at Mongoose Junction.

Imnmediately we knew where we HAD to go!! Walking into this place was like an air conditioned body products heaven. Everything smells amazing and the trick is figuring out what to buy without maxing out the credit card.

I won't tell you that the stuff is cheap, cause it's not, but it's not crazy expensive either. What I will tell you is that the products are fantastic and hold up well over time even without refrigeration (depsite the recommendations). The array of scents and products is wonderful. I also like the fact that they are all natural and as pure as they can be. Ex. Vanilla smells like vanilla and not some fakey version.

I loved this place so much I went back twice during our ten day trip!! All in all I dropped a couple hundred dollars on scrubs and body butter as well as lip balms. Two years later they are still working well although they are just now out of date.

The Nose Knows:

One of my other tricks for trips is that I always like to buy something (like pefurme, bubble bath or creams) that has a new and distinct scent from anything I currently use. I start using that product on the trip and therefore associate that scent with that particular trip.

The nose is a powerful memory generator, so whenever I want to remember the trip I use the perfume, bubble bath or cream and the scent takes me right back to that place!! It's a wonderful way to treat yourself and experience the pleasure of your destination all over again.

For example I can tell you when I smell L'Occitane's intensive hand cream I remember my trip to Edinburgh Scotland; Yuzu Body Scrub and cream: St. John; The Thymes Sleep Well bubble bath: New Orleans; Valentino's Rock & Rose perfume: Las Vegas; Perfumio di Santa Maria Novella Rosewater body splash: Florence, Italy. When I smell these I am literally transported.

Next time you head somewhere give this a try.

MB - it is kind of hidden upstairs at Mongoose. Up a little spirally staircase if I remember right. I am sure someone w/ better brain cells will give you specifics.

Gromit is 100% correct. It is not to be missed. Not cheap, but worth every penny in my experience. I do not like heavy or fake smelling scents. (Remember I am the one seeking a non-stinky self-tanner). It is fresh, light and yummy. There is something for everyone from those who like citrusy fruity to those who like sweet and warm scents. Ohhhhh I can't wait to go back!

It's upstairs towards the left hand side (if you're facing the from of MJ) of the complex. Right above the guy that does all the cool pottery. Their site says #510. I know where it is if I'm there, but because that place is a maze, it's tough to describe!

I worked for Body Deli the 1st year they opened on island....2004......
The products do have a shelf life but do last a bit longer......
The scrubs are a salt base so please use them b4 shaving.
They are right across from RI Patton upstairs.
Trevor used to have a little kiosk there taking reservations for day sails and such and was Mr. Information as well.

I saw it and ran the other way! I could not have afforded to go in there! I am crazy about smells and lotions and potions! I do not allow myself anywhere near them! Only for special occasions and we were in St John for the nature!

I'm sure you can tell by now I am very low maintenance on vacation! It isn't worth fighting the curls and with suntan oil and after tan lotion I really don't need to pack anything else! I would not have been able to get it all home!

I love their products! I am a "sweet" girl. I use the Vanilla and the Fruit smells. WARNING: The bugs of STJ like the "sweet" smalls too. I only use my products once I get them home

Maybe that's why I never get bit! The alcohol being emitted from my pores kills them before they bite me! :D

I had heard about The Body Deli right before our last trip and decided then and there that it would probably be beneficial to me and Honey's pocketbook to avoid it. I've got enough concoctions to open my own body shop! I am however going to make it a point to have a look see in June. At least this way I can plan for it and warn Honey in advance. I hate to see that unsuspecting cringe on his face when he's unprepared. It takes away from my sense of euphoria!
