Mayan Sky description and photo's

Post by budman »

Hello Diana2 and everyone, I'll try to give you a few more details about Mayan Sky and a few more pictures. I hesitate to send my interior shots of the villa because they suuuuuuuck! Please refer to Viva's site for those!!

Mayan Sky is in Upper Carolina. The roads and the driveway leading to the villa are perfect! You do have to make a hard right onto the driveway and if you don't make it just right you'll have to three point turn it, no biggie. At the top of the driveway you'll find room for at least three vehicles. We only had two vehicles and found it very roomy. One of the attached photo's shows a gate and walkway leading up to the villa, that is the only entrance to the villa. At the top of that walkway is the lower patio and pool area. Very nice space, completely private. Very nice view of Coral Bay from the pool deck, however if you are swimming in the pool you will not have that vista, but you will be surrounded by a perfectly landscaped property with an abundance of flowering tropical shrubs and trees. The pool and deck are nicely tiled and there is an outdoor shower next to the pool constructed of natural stone, shells, glass etc. you all know that beautifully artistic stone work I'm sure. My wife and I are going to try that design method at our cabin, wish us luck.

On the pool level is one of the three relatively equal master bedrooms. Each spacious bedroom has large arched mahogany doorways, high ceilings and ceiling fans. Each bedroom has a very large picture window with incredible views. All rooms have King size canopy beds with mosquito netting. Actually, we did not have any insect problems with this villa and we really opened it up while we were there. Even the sugar ants were kept to a minimum. Oh yeah, dare I mention the two scorpions found on the travertine tiled shower floor??? Actually, I have found these buggers in several very nice villas over the years. To me they are no more dangerous than a yellow jacket. I always do a quick check around the bedrooms and bathrooms especially when we first check into the villas. One year we had a huge nest of wasps in a palm tree branch right at my head level by our stairs. They were taken care of quickly. I now always check our entry ways for wasps. It's the tropics and you will see these things!

Let's keep going, each large bathroom has a shower with beautiful tile and a large screened window with a view to the great outdoors. The furniture in our room was very nice, plenty of storage. Huge closets in each room and I believe the room we were in had the only safe, but it was a large one that held two portable dvd players, IPOD docking station etc. The bathrooms were also well stocked with all of the fancy soaps and stuff you ladies like, including heavy robes and towels. Before I forget, there is a mid week cleaning provided with this villa.

Upstairs, are the two additional bedrooms, one is attached to the great room section and the third sits alone in its own pod, I think this one had the best view of Coral Bay. Each room had big double arched mahogany doors outfitted with retractable screens, our bedroom opened to the veranda porch as well as having a great room entrance.

The great room was spacious and had comfortable furniture, adults didn't sit in there much but the kids used the tv and stereo alot. There is a nice dining table to use if the rain comes down sideways on the covered veranda. That happened to us one morning for @ 10 minutes, then I wiped down the teak furniture and sat outside again. The kitchen is very well equipped. I found more supplies than I had ever found in a villa before, including an abundance of booze, mixers, frozen mixers etc. We wouldn't have had to buy hardly anything, however we brought alot of stuff not knowing. For years it seemed that the villas were being stripped of all of the left over supplies?? I want certain items, but I think next time I'll wait to buy things til after I check in.

There is a large washer and dryer closet between the great room and the master.

Oh yeah, this house had a whole house water filtering system, very cool!! Fridge made alot of ice and we bagged it each night for the coolers.

Villa had a very nice stainless outdoor grill that we used alot, especially after the power company explosion on St Thomas that shut the power down for 4 hours. Considering the accident I was surprised the power came back on that quick @ 11pm. I was in the middle of a homemade spaghetti dinner when the lights went out. Luckily the stove was gas and I continued until would you believe all of the burners shut off and would not reignite. I simply moved to the big gas grill, everyone helping with flashlights and candles, and completed the task. Next morning the power was on but the stove was still not working, so back to the grill and fixed bacon eggs outside, I actually enjoyed that! Called Viva and found out later that one of the house propane tanks had run dry, they had the problem fixed in two hours, way to go Viva!!

Well I'm tired now, I'll post some photo's and call it a night! I'll pick up with the new arrivals and Villa Carolina soon. If you have any more questions about this villa please ask, take care.

I was going crazy at work waiting to see your pictures. They are blocked so all I got was the description. Just got in and ran to the computer to check out Mayan Sky.
Question, a while back someone wrote in a review that there were no screens and said that at nite they had to close the doors and they felt kind of closed in. I noticed that you mentioned there were separate screen doors. What's the situation with the windows and screens? Just a little concerned about skeeters in May.
Looking forward to Villa Carolina review

Susan & Herb,

If you look at my shots of the villa and viva's you'll notice large windows in the bedrooms, the large windows do not open. There are smaller windows incorporated throughout the villa that do open.

Every room has large double arched doors and these have been retrofitted with double retractable screens. I bought these screens for our house in VA a few years ago and we don't care for them, however the ones at Mayan Sky are a new design and worked perfectly. They absolutely will be effective against skeeters. We honestly didn't experience a skeeter problem in Upper Carolina, but we did when we went into Cruz Bay where there are less breezes.

Here's what I do on the first day at the villa, I check for skeeters in the closets, under bathroom vanities, under beds (all the usual hiding places) and if I see more than a couple I'll buy a can of spray and hit those areas with it. Those tennis racket things work great too.

Try not to focus on them too much, think positive and deal with what ever happens.

Hey Maryanne,

My daughter was in charge of Mayan Sky's guest book and she said she does remember some drawings, she said a gecko drawing was very cool! Give these guys your take on the villa, if you don't mind?

Great review and pics. We stayed at In The Stars a couple of times and the views were very similar. I love Upper Carolina!

Susan and Herb,

If those large doors now have screens, you would absolutely no longer feel closed-in in the evenings.

It's a very nice house.
