Summer Songs

Post by jmq »

OK looking for tunes to make new playlist for STJ trip of songs that remind you of summer, have summer stuff in lyrics, or was a big hit during summer past (like I remember how unavoidable "My Sharona" was in summer of '79 - I hear that song and its instant flashback to college graduation).

I just got what will now be the "Summer of 07" song for me. Picked up my daughter the other evening from XC practice. She had just completed a 3+ mile run. Had the windows down, rolling through a fine summer evening, happened to have the Bon Jovi title tune from their new record Lost Highway cranked (guess I'm still a sucker for a well crafted pop tune).
She busted out into huge smiles, saying wow this feels great, the breeze, good sing along song, etc. (the post exercise endorphins no doubt flowing).
I told her she just experienced one of the finer but simplest pleasures in life that has been part of Americana since the 50s - cruising on a warm summer night with the windows down and the music cranked up. Nice moment that I'll remember when I hear that song yrs from now.
Anyways got me thinking about other summer tunes like Sheryl Crow "Soak Up the Sun" from a few yrs ago and Don Henly's "Boys of Summer".

So what are your summer tunes?
When we come to place where the sea and the sky collide
Throw me over the edge and let my spirit glide

The first that come to mind is Chicago, "Saturday in the Park." :) :)

There are others I'm sure, but I am in MSP and have to catch a plane to my next meeting. I'll think about it on the plane. What else is there to do? :D

SJfromNJ wrote:My brother somehow got a real nice copy of a Bruce Sprinsteen concert we attended in August of 1978 at Madison Square Garden. It was the opening night of like a 5000 shows series at the Garden (slight exageration), but he opens up with Summer Time Blues and it is smokin hot! It was his sister 16th birthday so the second song was Sweet Little 16 as he climbed the speekers on stage right to bring his sister down on stage. From then it was Badlands and then......

Kenny Who?

Summer Time Blues - Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band August 1978 Madison Square Garden
Bruce Who?????? She says in jest!
Is this set called Summertime Bruce? I might have it in my arsenal if anyone's interested. Going to search for it now.

The Woodstock Album (Album? What's an album?!?!?)

As I reach for a peach
Slide a rind down behind
The sofa in San Tropez.
Breakin' a stick
with a brick on the sand.
Ridin' a wave
In the wake of an old sedan

MrB, we seriously love that song in the RickG household! I can hear him singing it now. Crank the windows down...
