Trip Report July 9-23

Post by Rhonda »

This was our seventh trip to the USVI. The first four we stayed on St. Thomas and the last three on St. John. We had a wonderful trip and celebrated our 37th anniversary while we were there. We stayed at Samuel Cottages for the second year in a row. They are very basic but we like them and by staying here we can stay two weeks. They are close to the beaches we like and to Cruz Bay.

The only problem we encountered was at the beginning of our trip. Our flight was 2 hours late leaving DFW. Our plane had a hydraulic leak so they had to find us another plane. I am very thankful they found the leak before we left DFW but this caused us to miss our connection in Miami which caused us not to get our rent car in St. Thomas as planned. Discount Car Rental was closed by the time we arrived at 8:30 p.m. (we were suppose to arrive at 3:00). We stayed overnight at the Holiday Inn in St. Thomas and picked up our Jeep Liberty the next morning. We stopped to get groceries and were on the 11:00 car ferry to St. John. Finally!!

Here is a list of restaurants and beaches that we enjoyed.

Beaches & snorkeling sites. Not in any particular order:

Honeymoon & Caneel - Saw porcupine fish, octopus, barracuda, turtle, 2 eels, grey angelfish, nurse shark.

Caneel Bay - lots of fish and 7 sting-rays.

Hawksnest - amazing coral.

Maho - queen angelfish, barracuda, string-ray.

Salt Pond - sting rays, large trunk fish, barracuda, flounder.

Waterlemon - octopus, porcupine, lots of starfish (they were hard to see because of millions of silversides), amazing coral and purple fans.

Jumbie - I think it was a reef shark that I saw. I did not hang around to check him out.

Gidney - Not a lot of fish but a beautiful beach.

Restaurants:

Pastory Gardens - Good food & service, fantastic view, good Bushwackers. This was our favorite.

Beach Bar - Good food, nice view, good Painkillers.

Lime Inn - Good food

Uncle Joe's - wonderful bar-b-que

Vie's - good conch fritters and chicken.

We also took a daysail on the Wayward Sailor which was absolutely wonderful! Lots of fish including an octopus, lobster, tiggerfish, and the coral was unbeliveable. Captain Phil was great and very informative. This was our anniversary present to ourselves.

Something else we enjoyed was getting up early and watching the hummingbirds, bananaquits, and iguanas around the cottage. I put out sugar water for the hummers and sugar for the bananaquits. They are so much fun to watch.

We had a fabulous trip and are looking forward to next summer when we hope to return! Now if I can just get back into my normal routine and quit dreaming of St. John!

Hi there. Sorry about the plane trouble. Glad you made the best of it and didn't let it put a wet towel on the rest of the vacation. Hey I didn't mean that as a pun, or did I??? We also enjoy Pastory Gardens and usually eat there more than other places. God bless...Bill

Great trip report. Samuels Cottages are delightful, I hope that development passes them by.
