Two Snorkels and Masks for Hawk! (For sale)

Post by Ksea »

Hello all you bargain hunters! My son and I decided we are not snorkelers (well I convinced him he wasn't) after reading all those scary shark sighting stories

So, if anyone would like to buy our new US Divers Snorkel and Mask sets, please pm me. I can send you pics. One set is yellow and the other is blue. We will put the $$ towards our next trip to STJ in 2008.

We took them in the water but never actually put them on! These might be great for your kids that you dont want to spend a ton of money on. I'll mail them out Priority Mail anywhere in the US. Thanks for reading!

Oh Ksea don't give up snorkeling before you give it a chance! Think of it this way ~ you were going to snorkel in the ocean, you know "all" types of fish live in the ocean so you obviously knew there were sharks in there. Just because now you know someone saw them personally doesn't mean they are now tons more than there was when you bought your snorkel gear. Just give it a try, if it freaks you out then don't do it again.

XOXO

I agree, don't give up yet. Snorkeled at four different beaches on STJ last week and didn't see a single shark, no baracuda's either.

Ksea, don't give up! They're more scared of you than you are of them. They have tons of their own kind of food to eat in that big ocean, why would they want to bother with you? :D I bet if you even tried to get close to one, it would swim very quickly in the opposite direction. To them, YOU are the alien! Once you get your head underwater and discover the wonders down there you won't be scared at all!

Don't give up yet!! There's a really amazing world below the water that many people on this planet never get to see. It is a thrill to get a peek in on it.

My MIL thought she'd hate snorkeling (she's not outdoorsy and is a little claustophobic). On their first trip to STJ, FIL could hardly get that woman out of the water. Their second trip is coming up very shortly and she sprung for a prescription mask so she'd be able to see even more than she did last time.

At least give it a try. Besides, what kind of example are you setting for your son to quit at something, because it's scary and unknown, even before you try.... (a little well-intentioned Mommy Guilt there, please don't take it the wrong way).

When I took my boyfriend for the first time, it was in the Florida Keys, it was not a great day for him because the water was very deep and water a little rough, so when I dragged him to St. John he gave it another try. Now, he loves it and can't wait to bring his kids with him to show them "his" turtles :) He loves it and can't wait until December. We have snorkled almost every beach down there. Salt Pond was his favorite. The water is not very deep and St. John is very safe. From what I read on this Forum there has been no attacks from sharks in 50 years. I know your trying to be a good Mom, but your doing yourself a disservice and your child. What better way to teach your child about nature, Discovery channel is great don't get me wrong, but I personally like the real thing! Nothing to be scared about at all. St. John is the best place for snorkeling. With Global warming you may not have this in the future.

Giving up snorkeling is no big deal to us. We found SO many things to do that we loved on STJ. Why stress about something you are not comfortable with? My son has Down Syndrome, and does not learn as quickly as the rest of us. I am very protective of him, he is my only child and the love of my life!!
I also have to make sure Im around to take care of him for as long as possible, so, I avoid danger whenever possible. I think that makes me a pretty good Mom and I really dont feel Im depriving him of anything. He is spending his life traveling the US and the Islands and having a blast! He is getting an awesome education and participates in all kinds of sports including horseback riding. He has won several medals over the years in Special Olympics. OK so now Im bragging! The point is, we lead very full and interesting lives on a daily basis. We are not sad that we dont want to snorkel...there are so many other things we enjoy and are not "afraid of".
So, who needs some snorkel gear??

Sorry I offended you, I did not realize your situation. Enjoy your time on St. John. It's great that you take him to so many places. When I was growing up hardly ever traveled very far from Virginia, Mostly to the outer banks, that being said, I am afraid of the water there! Lot's of sharks! That is why I love St. John I can see my toes in the water. I read somewhere that they make floats for kids with a window that they can see underwater. That might work for you in shallow water also in St. Thomas they have submarines that can take you down as well. I think it is Coral World, have not been so maybe someone here can tell you more about it. I heard Angelina Jolie took her kids on it while they were on St. John.

Ksea, you definitely have to do what's right for you and your son. It's ok to be overprotective. I see 2 & 3 year olds riding bikes with no helmets by the busy streets and wonder where the parents are and what they could possibly be thinking? Not much obviously! I'm not ashamed to say that I am also an overprotective mom but my kids are not deprived of life's experiences by any means. As a matter of fact, they are both adrenaline junkies (bad genes from Honey). I've been nicknamed the "Tigress" protecting her cubs though and that's ok with me. My babies (19 and 9) are my life.

My son is taking a Discover Scuba class for his birthday. See, I'm working on my psycho over protective mom instincts. Honey is taking it with him and I will be there anxiously watching and smiling with pride.

No offense taken. My skin has gotten pretty tough over the last 14.5 years! But I can never pass up an opportunity to enlighten someone who may not understand our side of the story of life.
