All this talk about donkeys...

Post by wink1134 »

So, I've been reading the trip report about the search for the elusive St. John Donkey... I felt compelled to tell a little story about a donkey-encounter from my May trip.

We had a villa near Francis Bay and all of our donkey encounters happened around that area (mostly right before sundown).

We were snorkeling in Francis Bay one day and from the water we saw this donkey.

As we watched it a little longer, we noticed something funny going on. A little ahead of the donkey were 2 people.

They would walk a little and then stop and turn around to look at the donkey. When they did this the donkey would stop walking. Once the couple turned back around and kept walking, the donkey would continue to follow them - but keeping the same distance between them. This happened a couple times. Donkey walking... People stop and turn around... Donkey stops... It was really funny. I'm not sure if they fed the donkey food and he wanted more or if he was just curious... It was pretty entertaining...

Wink, I love your pictures! We didn't see any donkeys at Francis, and I was on high alert. I somehow received the impression that the donkeys traveled in packs/pairs, so to see a solitary one seems funny to me. Then again, as my report proves, I am clearly no donkey expert.

We've been laughing about the "No donkey today mon!" thread. We usually have to play dodge donkey and donkey slalom! In May, they were hanging out at the split going up to Centerline from Maho. They were posing for pictures and begging for treats. In Jamaica it would have been people!
