Trip report Day 3& 4$
Day 3 & 4
Day three found our gang a little hard to get moving. In fact it was like herding cats. We are traveling with two newbies, and though I vowed not to turn into Julie McCoy cruise director, my plan is not working out. We are having a lot of fun and they are great to have along but I'm constantly being peppered with "what's the plan for tomorrow", "what are we doing for dinner". I really would like someone else to just step up and make a decision. If we do this again I will definitely insist on two cars. Neither of the newbies wanted to drive so we have no choice but to be joined at the hip.
So, I digress.. Day three, late start we head to Cruz Bay for some walking around and shopping. Luggage still MIA, a looooong phone call with Delta the evening before left us bewildered and frustrated. On the way to town I give Delta one more call. They must have marked the file because no one would talk to me. They insisted on talking only to the "parent". Ok so Im a little sensitive about that. I guess I ruffled some feathers the night before when I started talking lawsuits. ( I don't think I mentioned I'm Im a lawyer by profession). Long story short, they tell us they are now assuming the bag is lost and we start the claims procedure. They will pay for what we have to buy now and replace what she lost $3000 max. So we go off shopping. Funny how a 19 yo can go from tears to all smiles at the thought of a little shopping on Daddy's credit card. Talk about sticker shock. Several hundred dollars later and she is minimally outfitted.
Back to the Villa for a late lunch. The workmen are around until 3:00. The Villa manager happens by and we talk about how much of a bummer it is to have four guys on the pool deck all week and he puts a stop to the work. They will not be back until we leave. We are just starting to relax when boom power goes out. A transformer blew on STT ( injuring several) no telling when the lights will come back on. So the most sober, you guessed it me and hubby are elected to go to town for emergency supplies. As we head for the door the phone rings. Its the Villa Manager, Delta called her the bag is on the 6:00PM Ferry and we can meet it at the dock. Now Im kicking myself for convincing step daughter to pick up a few of the things on sale ( final sale no return).
A quick stop at Ronnies for Pizza, swing by St. John ice for some block ice for the fridge, Peace Pine for candles and rum ( my idea of emergency supplies) and we settled into the pool, the coolest place for a water logged evening. Trade stories from my husband and his cousin's childhood, to the great delight of the 19yo. By 10:00 we are all in bed, a little inebriated, a little over heated but content.
Lights came back on by midnight, many kudos to ST. Thomas Power for getting them back up so quick.
Day Four: "What's the Plan?"
We get out real early for this group, 8:45 out the door and heading for Leister Bay. We are the first ones on the beach with the exception of the boaters moored overnight. We head right out and in seconds see a large turtle, sting ray and a gigantic barracuda swimming in the shade of the hull of a sailboat, the captain of which is waving us over frantically, he thought it was tooo cool. We head out to the Cay. A spotted ray, a huge star fish bed just on the west side of the Cay on the slope inside the mooring lines, another turtles, octopus, and assorted reef fish. To me the fish population seems down and the sea urchin population up. Before you know it's 1:00PM. The place is packed and we head out. Late lunch at Shipwreck Landing. Place was pretty empty, a glorious breeze blowing through. Food was quite good. I had the grilled Mahi sandwich, several had fish and chips, step daughter pan fried grouper. It was a nice lunch for 5, with a round of drinks for $120, not too bad.
After lunch we head to Maho for some more beach time. I just love late afternoon on the beach before we knew it, 5:30 and we head back home, a quick stop for some ice cream for later and we are in for the night.
I've decamped to my room for a little down time, but I guess I've got to go out there and face the inevitable question.... what are we doing tomorrow. How's about Vie's ( if she's open) . Any other suggestions?
More later, thanks for letting me vent. Im coming back down in three weeks and I swear Im not planning a thing.

I hear you loud and clear and agree completely. On our first trip to STJ we were with another couple and had only one Jeep. NEVER EVER again!! I'll never be 'velcroed' to anyone like that again. Every couple has to have their own Jeep or they're just not going. PERIOD. Cruise Director is not a title I with to have in real life and cirtainly not one that I want on MY vacation.

I couldn't agree more about the cars. This has come up in several threads. We brought our first couple with us a few years back and learned EXTREMELY quick that if we ever do it again, there will be more Jeeps.
Glad you enjoyed Shipwrecks - It's one of my personal favs and always rave about it. The tarter sauce they make (actually a dill sauce) is to die for. I crave it all year long. I think I eat they Fish & Chips at least 3 times in one week just to get my fill while on island!
Thanks for the reports and keep um' coming.

Thanks guys for the responses. I would post more often but I've seemed to have lost posession of my lap top to the 19 yo. She has taken to commendering the computer as well as our bedroom during the day. Her room is downstairs and I guess its too far to go... Hmmm I think I need to have a talk with hubby about this, need some space which is ours and only ours.
