Original art on island

Post by snorkelqueen »

We've shopped for art several times on island and I know I am missing something. Really not into the mass produced stuff or even signed litos at Mongoose. I would love to find an original watercolor by a local artist. I like folkart too and am considering a Jumbie I saw at the Pink Papaya near Lime Inn. Any suggestions? I've found great street artists in other places but seem to never see them in SJ. Maybe 'cuase they don't hang out infront of Woodys or Beach Bar.......

If you like watercolors, have you stopped into Elaine Estern's studio at Coconut Coast?
It's like looking in your soup and finding a whole different alphabet.

I also recommend Elaine. She's over on Frank Bay.

Check out Denise Wright's work it's beautiful. She is a member of the Artist Assoc. of St John and there is a link to her site on http://www.stjohnarts.org/artists-assoc ... bsites.htm

Denise painted our view of Ditliff from Belle Mer Villa for us one year in acrylic, it's awesome. Another is of a century plant in full bloom over Coral Bay. Check her paintings out on her website onlinevacations.com or go through the link above. She can paint any scene you would like. She may still have examples of her work next to Skinny's?? or call and ask to see her portfolio while having a drink in Coral Bay somewhere.

We also like Lisa Etre's work. She's also in the Artists Association and some of her work can be seen in the Pink Papaya next to my favorite restaurant the Lime Inn.

If you com to Coral Bay, go see Arlene at her shop a Cocolobo Plaza...and stop and see Doug at Crabby's,he has a small collection of pieces by an artist named Paz.
go a little further to Shipwreck Landing, at Tall ships Trading there are some original pieces by David Wegman.
Back in Coral Bay, there is some art on display at SkinnyLegs complex. Last, if you want to venture to the EasT EnD, you can visit our Studio. follow this link to an online profile. http://www.on-stjohn.com/2007/07/02/on- ... oop-jones/

I know this isn't supposed to be a place to "plug" businesses, but we were asked for suggestions for local arts and artists. I have to say if you've never been to Terry's,i.e. Sloop Jones' studio on the East End, you've done yourself a disservice. I've been there several times, and though I'm not comfortable with me wearing his clothes, my wife loves them for herself. Even if you don't buy anything, seeing the studio and its setting is more than worth the trip, IMHO.

There was an artist that was at the Rutniks studio, think her name was Kat.......like 3 years ago.
Also I know the Schnell's do not do watercolors, but I love Donalds work and I love the eye that he and Debbie both have for the pieces they sell.
I also agree with visiting Elaine Estern and of course Sloop Jones and Arlene out in Coral Bay area...
Also when you are on island, ask
there are many talented and creative people that make STJ their home.
