La Papaya Paradise: Part 3
On Sunday, we took the ferry over to Virgin Gorda for the day.
The boat trip took awhile, and we had to stop at Soper's Hole in Tortola to let off a few passengers, but the scenery was gorgeous, of course.
When we got to Virgin Gorda, our captain escorted everyone from the ferry up to the Customs office and we all waited a few minutes to go through. Then it was outside to "Speedy" and his jitney for a very fast and sometimes bouncy ride to the Baths.
The Baths was a lot of fun. We walked down the cool, shady paths to the beach, wondering what adventures lay ahead for us to discover. At the end of that short journey, we landed on a nice beach with very soft sand, some shade under a few trees, and a cool beach bar called "The Poor Man's Bar." We laid our towels out and headed for the huge boulders to wind our way through to the swimming beach on the other side.
Working our way through the huge boulders was like a little adventure. We climbed up slippery rocks, scrunched down on all fours to slip through and under passageways, climbed steep wooden stairs, and sloshed through cool water at the bottom of the caves created by the big boulders. In some places, it was downright chilly, but at the end, we emerged out onto one of the most beautiful beaches I've ever seen, with warm, crystal blue water and amazing views. It felt incredibly good to swim in the warm water after being in the cool 'boulder caves.' We spent quite a while just swimming around the lagoon and enjoying the beach and the marvelous water.
When we got hungry, we went back to our 'spot' and walked up to the Poor Man's Bar to get some lunch: hot dogs all around, with Cokes for the kids and Red Stripes for the adults. Nothing tastes better than a dog and a beer on the beach....
We relaxed for a while in the sun then swam for a little bit longer, then worked our way up to The Top of The Baths to await Speedy's return. We spent a half hour in the cafe/bar at The Top of The Baths and listened to the reggae band, and ordered a few pieces of chocolate cake for the table to share. The kids had soft drinks, and the adults enjoyed a Rum Runner while we took in the great music, the breeze, and the nice atmosphere of people relaxing after a great day of swimming and 'adventure.'
Then it was outside to meet up with Speedy and ride back to the docks, where we boarded the ferry for the return trip to St. John. What a great day at the Baths. We all loved it.
Back at Cruz Bay, we looked in at the Beach Bar for the Forum meetup, but it was packed and the kids balked at the idea of sticking around; they wanted to go back to the villa to hang out in the pool for the rest of the day. We headed back to La Papaya.
That night, we just relaxed in the pool, but came out long enough to make smoothies and deli sandwiches for supper. It was a great day and we all enjoyed it immensely.
