I guess it was me

Post by jectac »

I guess it was my exploitation of Lindy to mess with my daughter that has caused this. In no way was my antics intended to have her laugh AT Lindy, but to laugh at HERSELF. Understandably, she is afraid of him.

Yes, Lindy suffers from mental illness and that is terrible. I am sure that everyone on this board would lend a helping hand to him, if possible.

Don't be sorry you asked. Each answer comes from our own "place" ... you certainly didn't kick the hornet's nest since it's not the first time Lindy's been mentioned! I debated posting and didn't want to start a whole thingy and thought I might ...
No, I don't think Lindy or any other human being is "scarey" to kids or anyone - unless they are a threat. Remember the song from South Pacific about children being carefully taught? Lindy was just always there - like a fixture - and in fact, I wonder how many would have even noticed if he weren't pointed out.
It had nothing to do with someone being nice - it had to do with the tone of the thread. After all, every one of the folks from this board who I've met on-island or off are super nice. I know I haven't been around for awhile and not much when I am now but I sure don't remember that this is a place to display pix of nekkid people or even drunken ones so that we can scare the children! I am surprised!
As I am so familiar with those who have no voice and am busy advocating for them, I just didn't hear Lindy in the thread.
E'nuf ... do what you will

Now I am offended

Post by jectac »

I know that sometimes translation in typing is sometimes misinterpreted, so please take this in the nicest of ways.

I take offense, that you feel that my daughter being afraid of Lindy had been taught. The fact that on our last trip to St John, she witnessed Lindy in full frontal view, urinating in the street, just may had something to do with her fear.

Also, I take offense to the mention of the song "You Have To Be Carefully Taught". For you see, the reason my posts have been limited to 5 since the transfer of this forum is due to the fact that the same daughter, has been battling Leukemia since 2004, relapsing and having a transplant in 2006. We had long blonde hair, we had no hair, we had short curly hair, we had no hair, we had "moon face" from steroids. Please do not insinuate that I have not taught my daughter tolerance, acceptance and compassion for those who are sick or different. She has tolerated more than anyone.

jectac,

I hope that thoughts of St. John bring you and your daughter a big mix of lovely memories -- funny, tender, sweet, brilliant, and yes maybe even odd.

I also hope you all get to go back soon and, most important, that she's doing well.

If that's what you thought, then why did you post it? All you did was stir up trouble.

When I saw Lindy in the park, and didn't know who he was, I was startled at first. For all I knew, maybe he WAS a threat. You have to admit that he looks like a "dead man walking", in fact I believe my actual words were "he looks like a walking cadaver." My heart goes out to Lindy, and Luna and anyone else who is mentally challenged and has to live in a park, or worse. But the knowledge they they are ill doesn't make them less scary-looking when you accidentally run into them in the park without warning.

Jectac........I sure hope and pray your little girl is healthy and will be a normal "pain in the ass" teen that we all take for granted.

As for Lindy, he is a bit scary at first, until you realize he is harmless and very helpless. I've been told the Catholic church takes him in from time to time a bathes him and gives him clean clothes and food. If this is true, maybe that would be a worth while STJ charity. It was a boat captain that told me this.

I think we all have a sense of humor and don't wish anything but the best for Lindy. For anyone who was offended, I know it was not ment to be harmful to him and was maybe a little insensitive to those who have family members in the same, or near, boat.

I know I get a bit overboard with my own goofie sense of humor, and sometimes I think I might be offending someone, but I sure don't mean to do that.

Let's all have a great weekend and enjoy thinking about STJ!!

I hesitated to respond to this topic, because I was severly rebuked on the OnStJohn.com site for voicing my opinion that I didn't think photos of Luna laying in the street, or the story about her drinking someone beverage at Woody's was amusing. People at that site told me to "get a life". I no longer go to that site as I don't feel that my opinions were respected. I know some of us on this forum also participate in OnStJohn, so I hope you'll indulge me one more time with my opinion. I'm sorry, I just don't think stories or photos of Lindy and Luna are amusing. I feel heartly sorry for them and for all who suffer mental illness and addictions. I am pleased that Fr. Crespo at OLMC church helps Lindy - and I'm sure there are many others who benefit from that church as well. Thanks for letting me air my feelings here.

Just re-quoting myself.
Xislandgirl wrote:Someone asked a question and it was answered. Some people made comments, end of story.

There are many topics on this board that people may find innapropriate or offensive and we all have the option to walk on by and ignore it.

Saying that we can do better is a bit insulting to those that have posted their opinions or comments.

We have been through this before with many other topics; drinking, nekkidness, etc.
We all need to learn to be more tolerant of each other's personalities. We are all very different people from very different backgrounds and we all consider different things appropriate. No one is right or wrong and certainly no better than each other in any way.

I respect your viewpoint, but I don't think that this thread represents that we are not nice people.

Well, I'm sorry I guess I'm a terrible person because I do think that stories of Lindy and Luna are funny. I don't think that they situation that put them there is funny. And before you jump on your high horse I volunteer at homeless shelters and play sports with disabled children.

People’s actions can be funny regardless of the circumstance that put them there. Disabled people can be truely funny with and without intent.

I would totally make fun of the sorority girl passed out on campus (which happened to me just the other day!). One could say, "but wait a minute hardonyou, is it funny that she has low self esteem because she was raised by wolves and now has to drink herself into oblivion to feel acceptable?". No, it's not, but a drunken co-ed passed out and drooling on her self at 8:30am on a Wednesday is funny as hell.

Everyone can be offended by something. I don't think anyone on here had mal intent, other than to have a laugh. And honestly, I had been followed once from Woody's to my Jeep down the street, I was definitely concerned, however, now due to the post I know this person as the famous Lindy. Educational and funny as well!

Cypressgirl! Rock on that you quoted yourself!

I'm kinda with Sunflower on this one. I saw Lindy last night but that was about it. Actually seemed to be doing well listening to some music outside the Beach Bar. Sometimes I get the feeling that some of the forum think that he and Luna are part of the local flavor of STJ.

I'm not sure the same response would be made if you all visited Los Angeles and made a trip down to 7th and San Pedro. It's not part of the local flavor of Los Angeles
