Please help me decide!

Post by jeanzb »

My husband and I LOVE to snorkel. We've been to St. John several times and are now thinking about a trip to either the Cayman Islands or Turks and Caicos. Which has better snorkeling? And we're certainly open to any other suggestions! Thank you very much.

We stayed on Provo, T & C in 2004. We rented a house on the beach and there was a large reef about 50 to 100 yards off shore.

My mom thinks the snorkelling on Provo was much better than St. John as the coral is pristine and plentiful on Provo. I will say we saw tons of sea life and the coral is dramatic.

There are spots all along Grace Bay Beach to snorkel. Be prepared to swim and deeper water - 20 + feet. It sort of freaked my hubby out a little bit to be far from shore in open water.

We really liked Provo and will return some day but we prefer many things about St. John that keep us coming back.

Jeanzb,

We were in Provo, Turks and Caicos last year. The water and snorkeling is awesome. Grace Bay is a beautiful white sand beach and has many condos to choose from. This island is all about the water. Rent a jeep (driving on the left)and explore all the different beaches, or take one of the many water excursions. You can snorkel on the third largest reef. It's starting to get very build up with many condos. It's a shame really because it's second on my list for beautiful beaches and snorkeling. Of course nothing will ever compare with my beloved St John. Provo is NOT a beautiful island. It's dry and not pretty at all. (sorry, I hope I don't offend anyone, this IMHO) St John is a beautiful island with it's hills, flora and views. At least 2/3 of it is preserved and park land. So important.

Turks and Caicos is worth checking out. The people are very nice and they have some of the best conch, I have ever tasted. If you have a desire to go, go sooner rather than later. (It's getting built up fast)

PM me if you have any questions. Good Luck
:D

I agree with Grace- get to Provo for some awesome snorkeling, but do it soon, as it is getting so built up. and as PA Girls said, it is in deep water
and different than snorkeling in STJ. I would like to go back, but just can't drag my family away from STJ and its beauty.
