A wine paring list to go with our SJ cookbook
I am into wines and always looking for moderately prices wines that are fantastic.
As we eat lots of fish, I usually choose white wines, mostly Savignon Blanc or Sancerre. I have found as I told Marybeth, that New Zealand Savignon Blancs are great with fish, sushi especially. Yet, I have read that pinot noir and champagne are recommended for sushi, who would have thought.
It would be great if we could have some suggestions from everyone of wines, red or white that they have enjoyed with an approx. price.
Unfortunately, I found the wine selection on SJ to be outrageously expensive for mediocre wine. A bottle that I pay $10.00 for in NJ, which is certainly not expensive, was $20.00 in SJ. So I wound up buying $10.00 bottles and using lots of ice because they were so bad.
I know Bushwackers are cheaper, but they really don't go with tuna do they?

Susan, Not sure if I know where you are in N. NJ but do you ever get to the Wine Library? They are in Springfield. I love their web site and their director of wine (not sure of his exact title) does a daily web cast that is really informative and down right funny. http://winelibrary.com/

Actually, we are 15 minutes from Morristown, which should give you a landmark. Yes I have heard of the The Wine Library, but never been there. He is competition for Gary Winemarket which is in Madison (the main store). I actually think The Wine Library has gotten bigger. I drove by their warehouse, wow! Will have to catch the web cast.
thanks

Sparkling wines are great with sushi - especially a good Champagne or Rose Champagne. We had a Riesling with sushi the other night and it was fantastic. Traditionally the wines to drink with seafood are usually a little sweeter than Sancerre, but I also like a dry, clean wine like Sancerre with fish (Sancerre is made from Sauvignon Blanc).
Mixology used to have the Stags Leap Sauvignon Blanc for less that $20 a bottle -
If you can find a bottle of the below (we were at the Wine Library on Sat. but they were out of it) I highly recommend it - one of the best bottles of white wine I have ever had:
Donnhoff (the producer)
Schlossbockelheimer Felsenberg
Reisling Spatlese 2004
From the Nahe area (Nahe is also on the label - I got the label from the sommelier)
This wine is low alcohol (8 %) and a touch on the sweet side (not a light crisp wine, but not an oaky or heavy wine - just amazingly smooth in your mouth with dozens of floral and fruit flavors) but it was great with our sushi.
My father was a wine salesman and I briefly sold wine in NJ many moons ago. I am a big wine fan and living in Italy now it is my number #1 hobby. You should also look for some whites from the Friuli region in Italy - a label I really like is Lis Neris - they make several single vineyard Chardonnays that are very clean and crisp - no oak, all stainless.

I really miss the wine shop that was in the old blue building on the road to starfish. They used to have a pretty good selection of wine. Now we actually find the best prices for decent wines are over on STT. Last trip we stopped into Marina market and picked up a few things.
The worst place for wine has to be Dolphin Market. They had some nice produce, but the wine was ridiculous. Probably the most laughable thing we found was a bottle of George Dubeouf Beaujolais Villages from 1994 priced at $70!! It was probably vinegar.
Sancerre is my favorite white wine, and I really like viognier too. As far as pinot noir with fish, we do drink that sometimes, especially with salmon and tuna.
If there are specific nz sauvignon blancs that you like, I would like to know their names. We do buy them regularly, but seem to find that only about half are likeable. Sometimes they are just too grassy for me.

It's like looking in your soup and finding a whole different alphabet.
