How come nobody ever mentions Little Maho?

Post by chrisn »

I was looking at the St. John Beach Guide and came across Little Maho. Now I am pondering the fact that it is rarely ever mentioned. I've never been there. Have any of you? You can't get to this beach from Maho right? Don't you have to go to the Maho Bay Campground to access it?

How come nobody ever goes there? Is it not a very nice beach? What gives??? :?

We went to it once, but to get there you have to walk all the way down the Maho campground stairs, passing people's tents on the way. We felt like we were invading the privacy of the people camping at Maho. Plus, the beach is small, and tends to be busy with campers not only swimming but using the watercraft that are available to them. We figure with the bigger Maho and Francis right there, why go to Little Maho? Plus, walking back up all of those stairs is not as easy as just hoofing back to your car. :D

Am I confused, isn't Little Maho between Maho and Francis?

If that is the case, when you swim around the right point between Maho and Francis from Francis, isn't that Little Maho there? If so, we have snorkeled it for both Maho and from Francis.

We have also snorkeled Gibney/Oppenheimer starting at Hawksnest...snoreled all the way to the other side too - where we almost ran into the nurse shark "sleeping" under the over hang of a rock.

Anyway, if that is Little Maho, it's easy to get to from the water. If not, can someone explain more about where it is.

Maho Bay Camp is on Little Maho. Maho Bay is the one you drive past. Just past the rocks on the right of Little Maho is a small piece of Little Maho that some may think is all of Little Maho.

If you get a chance, snorkel the right side of Maho. All the way around the corner thats little Maho. Pretty good snorkeling, we saw some really nice angelfish.

And it's actually named Lille Maho! Lille meaning little in Danish.

It's a nice spot, but 113 steps up and down set the women folk to whining. I like to swim over from Francis Bay. It's possible to do a rock scramble.... if you channel some iguana essence.

Best bet is to hit Maha Bay Campground for breakfast (you can park next to the dining pavillion) and then walk through and check the place out. There's no assumption of privacy there as long as you stay on the boardwalks.

Cheers, RickG
