I can admit it...I'm cheap. Well, at least when I travel. When I started travelling on my own, I was too broke to afford any luxury, but even now I'm stingy on vacation expenses. I simply enjoy being in a new place so much that the creature comforts that would matter at home are less important.

That said, I still require A/C.

RickG - Thanks for the great info. I copied your itinerary (I hope you don't mind) and will investigate the towns. It sounds like a lot of fun, and something we've been talking about doing, and I know my guys would love to try all of the beers over there. Have fun this January and I can't wait to hear how it all went. 8)

Starfish...If I had a kid like yours, I'd just savor the few moments you have left with him and do STJ when he's at Oxford or Harvard or wherever.

I'm a twice a year on the cheap! (although 10 day minimum)

Like it's been said in previous posts...the luxury is being there! I also agree with those that say that one week is too short. So, I've become a, if I can swing it, 10 day minimum kinda STJ traveler. The, at very least extra three days, for me, makes a world of difference!

When I lived on island, I met this couple who came to STJ about 2-3 times a year.....
1. one time they had a catamaran and spent more time tooling around on the boat, came ashore and spent a night or 2 at Ivans
2. they spent the next trip at Maho or Concordia and ate out and that was a relatively inexpensive trip.
3. would be for a birthday and they always stayed at one of the Schnell's villa's.

Their kids were grown and when they did the cat they brought the grandkids..........
I could care less about AC as long as the fans are working which keeps the bugs at bay.....
Everywhere on STJ you can get a beautiful view and heck sit at the bar and split an app and save $$$.
I agree getting there is the $$$ part
