STJ on the Cheap?

Post by RickG »

Gang,

Would you rather go to STJ on the cheap for two weeks or two one-week trips in a year.... or splurge for a single week with a decadent villa and dinners out every night?

I find I get different kinds of company depending on which approach I take.

Cheers, RickG

What a great question to ponder. I don't know. I require a pool and a/c in the bedroom (your mosquito stories were enough to convince me of that). However, the accommodations don't need to be fancy otherwise. I suppose at this point in my life (with those two considerations), I'd prefer a longer stay than decadence for a week.

Rick, I would go two weeks on the cheap without doubt! It's pure luxury just to be there.

I would take two one week vacations. Not too cheap, not too fancy.

Definitely on the cheap. That's how we do it every time - but we do go out to dinner each night. I don't need luxury and the bugs get me no matter where I sleep!

2 less fancy weeks hands down.

My husband feels the opposite as he doesn't like to take off work for more than one full week at a time per year. (shorter breaks in addition to a full week are no problem)

If it's a choice, absolutely 2 weeks on the cheapie cheapie.
Being there is what matters.
Comfy pleasant digs are necessary, but not fancy is just fine by me.

Hi Rick ... good question!
I would definitely not splurge and only go 1 week! However, 2 weeks at once or twice a year for 1 week each time is a tougher decision! I would really like to choose 2 budget STJ trips/year, 10-14 days each. I would be happy to live very inexpensively while there, just get me there :D

Two weeks, definitely. The first time I went, it was about the villa, the restaurants, etc. Now, it's about BEING THERE. I can eat at a fancy restaurant at home! Two weeks.

I had pondered this question as well. I wanted to spend a week each on Virgin Gorda and St. John but I couldn't decide whether to do 1 week this Summer and 1 week next, or both weeks next Summer. It's pretty difficult waiting so long to return to paradise even if you do have little excursions planned elsewhere.

The deciding factor...Saving $2500 on airfare and waiting until next Summer to do two weeks at once.

It was a damn hard decision to make.

I can't go on the cheap, sad but true. But I wouldn't want one week at a really expensive fancy villa either, not worth it!
This year will be two 1-week vacations, although we're trying to extend our December trip to 9 days. Both Mike & I enjoy the break TWICE a year, and going to STJ is so easy and we can keep the trip simple.

My vote is for twice a year, 7-10 days each. :P :P :P

Good question Rick!
