Dinner on a budget (funny I know) - - STT and STJ?

Post by LandLockedBeachLover »

Realizing "inexpensive" restaurants are a true anomoly in the VI's, however, any recommendations for casual, <$20 entrees in mostly STT and a few in STJ? On my list of faves that we've been to before are : Greenhouse, Sopchoppy's (or whatever it is now), Duffy's, Molly Malone's, JJ's Texas Roadhouse.......that's about it.

what about island blues? I was there for lunch, not sure what dinner looks like. of course what ends up costing the $$ is the painkillers, etc.
I haven't tried it but Chinese take out also another option.

Inexpensive Eating

Try Ms Gladys in the shopping area of Charlotte Amelie. Restrooms are down the alley, but Ms Gladys sings and cooks! Rick&Leah

We ate breakfast at Ms Gadys three times last month. The food was very good and I recall a check in the low $20 range for two of us. It's a short walk to the CA ferry --- if it's running. If it's not I guess it's a short walk to their empty dock. :D

If you like Indian food, Mojo Cafe has a night-time menu which is really good and inexpensive. They also have pates which are delicious. (Can someone who is a foodie please describe "pates"?!)

Mojo Cafe is right near the ferry dock and we've been getting take-out dinner from there a lot, but I imagine it would be kind of a fun spot to sit and watch Cruz Bay go by, since it's right across the street from Mooie's. We get pates, stir-frys, yummy chicken wings with your choice of three sauces, Vindaloo(a stew), cool specials....I think this place is a great bargain.

I'm not sure what they serve for drinks because we always take our meals home, but you can call and ask them if you can buy or bring beer or wine or whatever. You will dine for WAY under $20.00 per person, I'd say.
340-776-8399 after 5pm.

I keep asking them to post a menu, but they're waiting for their "graphic artist" to do their web site. Maybe I'll just scan their menu and post it in the meantime...

It means something else here, but if I try to describe it I know I won't make it sound as good as it is. Someone please help.

It is similar to a Jamaican beef patty except:

the dough is more like fried dough (or a johnny cake)

they fill them with lots of stuff: beef, chicken, and salt fish

I thought the same thing mb thought...so I googled pate:
pate: elliptical rolls of dough filled with ground beef, chicken, salt-fish or conch, a soft Caribbean shell-fish. At just $2-$4 each, pates -- similar to Jamaican patties -- make a cheap lunch that works well as a beach-side picnic.
