I am like Xislandgirl, I have gone back and paid the cleaning fees. I tend to go when it is low season so my buddies are not losing $$.
I have a buddy who has a home in the keys and I would expect to pay for staying there.
I would let anyone stay in my house if I had one on island and did not need the rental rates........lol
I would be on island for 2 months

I think most friends would (should) offer something for the priviledge of staying there, and if they offered I might ask them to cover the utilities. (If they stayed once and offered nothing, I probably wouldn't invite them back. It would make me feel like a sucker.)
We used to stay with our friends in their parent's lake house on occassion, for free. So we would do some work for them -- clearing brush, painting, etc. It helped them and it was wonderful for us, because no way could we have afforded that house!
