You guys always want things to be like they are back home. Sooner or later, when it is, you won't like it anymore. Now, large companies have expensive programs tha generate confirmation numbers. Small business don't have them. I get calls from people asking for a confirmation number. Now with five rooms, I don't have such a system either, I usually answer, how about 7, sound good to you?
I also get calls from folks at 4 in the morning, and when I ask them to call back at a decent hour, they ask, this is a toll free number isn't it? Sorry, no operator standing by! Certainly products of the now TV generation!
Relax. Those car rental guys are usually okay with their reservations.

I never expected a confirmation number. They said they had me down when I called in January and were very nice. I guess since they said I should reserve a car for 9 am the next day after arriving because I would be there after they closed on Friday, I had this 9 am time on my mind. What was I thinking? Now that I know it will be afternoon before the car will be ready I can make alternate plans and I am fine with that. Thanks everyone for the suggestions.

I live in a small town where people from the Chicago area come up to recreate. Some of them expect too much from these small business owners, some of them trash our lakes, litter, etc. ( no offense Chicago people, I know you aren't all like that). It does feel real good to live in a place that people come to play though. But I can definitely sympathize with STJ residents and I will get on island time before I get there. 8)

If they have you down for a rental on Friday (ie: pick it up on Friday) but you arrive too late after the office closes, it will be there for you at 9am Saturday morning - do I make sense? (don't be rude Jorge and say I never make sense  ) but you will be paying for Friday.
Another other option might be, depending on what time and what date you arrive I might be able to pick up the keys for you (I sometimes work for a villa rental company so they know me and I do this all the time) as I usually work in town on Fridays but I will only be there till 5pm so I don't mind hanging around for alittle while for you, (not till 7 or 8 though) but you will need to return the next day before noon to fill out the paperwork - I will also double check with the rental co to make sure that it would be OK. Let me know.

Pia,
Thanks so much for your generous offer! However our plane supposedly arrives at 3:15 so catching the 5:00 ferry is optimistic. It may be later depending whether we have plane delays, etc.
I originally reserved the car for Saturday. I talked to my husband about changing it to Friday. He doesn't want to pay the extra day so we will make alternative plans on Saturday morning. We will see how the weather is. If it's nice we will take a taxi to a beach. If it is raining we will shop or go to a restauraunt/bar. We can walk to town from where we are staying. It's all good.
We do thank you so much for your generous offer and thanks for the Friday idea!
We'll see you next Sunday.

Hi RonUSVI: Actually, we don't want things to be like they are at home, that's why we go somewhere else! For me, I just want some acknowledgement that yes, we got your fax, and yes, you'll have a car. Since cars are obviously limited on an island, it's just a part of planning ahead to make sure you have a reservation, esp. if you're traveling at a peak time.

I find it quite refreshing when things are run like a small business and you're not treated like a number. However, I'll admit that it can take some de-programming to get me into an island frame of mind. That's why I post questions on this forum... and you all always come through for me!
