Tell me about August on St. John

Post by Nic in KC »

Having just returned, some friends are wanting us to go in August with them. Trying to decide if it's too irresponsible to go again that soon!

Any help is appreciated!

I've never been there in August, but I'd definitely get trip insurance. It's hurricane season!

I've been in August and am going back again this year. Trip insurance is a good idea for peace of mind.

It's August in the tropics, days were hot, but on the beach in the shade, sometimes I actually felt a little cool. The water was wonderful, temperture was great not too warm, still refreshing when you went in. I would definitly opt for a place with AC in at least the bedrooms. We were in a Villa up high on Gift Hill and the breezes were nice, but not cool enough to sleep, the rooms tended to bake all day and never cooled off enough to be comfortable without the AC. Expect a quick rain storm almost everyday. Some resturants close, I beleive there is a list posted somewhere on this forum .

Personally, I think its a great time to go. Im making two trips also this year as well, one in July and another four weeks later in August, so you have my vote .. go for it!!!

Once in September

Post by Tina »

We were there two Septembers ago. It was hot, but quiet. Not sure if any of the restaurants may be closed, that usually occurs most in September I think. You have enough time to plan!

We've been to STJ twice during August and loved it both times. Like previously stated, it is hot and humid, but if you stay wet, it's tolerable. (the water temps are perfect!) We have bought trip insurance during this timeframe, but luckily did not have to use it.

You definitely will want A/C in your villa and Jeep.

My boss was thinking about going to the VI's and renting a charter yacht, but was told by a 'friend of a friend' you don't want to go then when it's so warm because of the sea lice.
Personally, I've never encountered any sea lice.

I've not been in Aug., but will this year. I have beeen twice in July and it is Hot! Be sure you get ac. Even STJ can have a heat wave. I was there a couple of summers ago and the locals were complaining about the heat. But, the water is usually warm and calm and I think it's a great time of year to be on the beach. (minus a hurricane!)

Get trip ins. and go and have the time of your life.

The temperature is actually not that much higher than right now....but from about 11 Am ot 4 Pm the sun is very hot. I work outside and try to avoid the sun during those hours. Sunrise is about 5 AM. The mornings are wonderfully sweet and after sunset the air is delightful.

Been there several times in August and it was fine.
Hot yeah but yesterday it was 106. We just always get to the beach early and were back to the house by 2:30 or 3:00.
Cypressgirl, when are you going to be there in August? Me and my crew will be there the first week.
Its all good!

We honeymooned in STJ in August 6 years ago and have been back there each August since.

It is a bit hotter but not unbearable with the breeze. Best part is that you will have most of the place to yourself... beaches...parking in town.

Sad to say we won't be down this August. Wife is expecting the last week in August. I tried to convince her that it would be so cool if this little one could have hte claim that he/she was born in the "ilons" but she wouldn't have it.

Oh well... have a great time!

My husband and I honeymooned on STJ in August of 2003 and will return for our 5th annual trip this June (this is the first time we'll go so early in the year...in the past we've always gone in late July/August).

As far as having a baby goes, we joke that we don't have kids yet so we can keep going to STJ...I guess it's true in your case though...baby = no STJ...so maybe we'll keep it up with this no kids thing!

No no no ... don't be silly  nothing usually keeps us from STJ, even our own offspring.

We have a three year old and we never missed a year in STJ until this year... thank god for grandparents!

In fact I think having kids makes the trips alone to STJ that more special.
