Canon A640 w/ Underwater Housing

Post by David_A »

Are the weights recommended for snorkeling? My intuition says no, that they're really designed for diving, but I thought I would ask.

Thanks

While I do not have the Cannon, but a Sony Cybershot, I think the weights would have been handy. Not that the camera adds to your overall personal bouyancy, but it is a pain to have the camera constantly trying to get back to the surface. ALWAYS use a wrist strap that is snug to the wrist...not just a loop your hand goes thru.

HAPPY PIC HUNTING!!!!

I have the Canon A630 and snorkeled without weights this past January. I had no problem and was even a bit comforted by the fact that the camera would float if I dropped it. I too, used the wrist strap tightly around my wrist. No problems - enjoy!

We, SuefromMa) and I used the Canon A630 with the Canon underwater housing in April. It is a great combination! The A640 boasts 2MP more resolution, but we are happy with ours. The shots can be cropped to gain a "closer" looking shot, but the outfit is not so bouyand as to make a difference. What I did find, however, was that it is difficult to get down for better angles. Check out Sue's trip report April 21 - 29th for some examples. Next trip, I may rent a weight belt to see if I can attain neutral bouyancy so that I don't bob up like a cork after diving for a shot.

In the past, I have taken my Canon D400 with the underwater housing and no weights. I liked the fact that it floated up behind me whilst snorkeling. Although I had a wrist strap tightly around my wrist, I was glad to know it would float to the top should I accidently drop it.

Now, I am taking the new Olympus 770, and it sinks like a rock. I am a little worried about that, but I do plan to use the wrist strap when I am in the water.

Bottom line, the weights are for SCUBA mainly. There are multiple weights you can put on the housing for bouyancy at different depths. I don't think I would use the weights for just snorkeling.
