Rams Head Full Moon Hike

On Feb 3 the Friends of the Virgin Islands National Park are having a full moon hike to Rams Head. My wife and I are interested in going but don't have a rental car that day. WWe were wondering if anyone else is going and leaving from Cruz Bay and would be willing to let the two of us hitch a ride? Maybe in exchange for a few rounds of Painkillers or something. Thank you.

Apparently none of the people on the Feb. 3rd hike are Forumites or I'm sure they would have answered you by now. When I did the Reef Bay hike, everyone met at the VINP building and taxis took us over to the trail head. Maybe they do that for the Ram's Head hike also. Good luck!

I can't help you with a ride. But I did the full moon hike in December-it was awesome. Bring flashlights. Most of the time you can just see by the moonlight but we needed the extra light on parts of the hike.

I switched the days that we will have our rental car so that we are able to do the hike. We are excited about it. I've heard it's a really cool hike.

ATGC: Remember that the full moon always rises at about the same time as the sun sets, so if you head out a bit earlier, you can catch both sunset and moonrise from the cliffs at the end of Ram Head (by the way, there's no possessive "s" at the end, just as with "St. John"). In summer, the sun will set over Bordeaux Mountain, but at this time of year, it sets over the open Caribbean and Vieques, 50 miles away. A few years ago, we caught an amazing sunset and moon rise from the end of Ram Head on the evening of the winter solstice, but the hike was nearly a disaster, due to exceptionally poor planning. We didn't bring any flashlights, since the hike was a spur of the moment thing, and hey, there was going to be a full moon! Unfortunately, the moon doesn't get very high in the sky until quite late in the evening, and the trail floor back was completely lost in the dark. Our return would have been a debacle, but some kind folks who we met out at the point loaned us a flashlight, which the three of us shared and then left in their truck back in the parking lot. Even sharing a single flashlight made for quite difficult going; make sure that everyone in your party has their own. With that, decent ankles, and a slow and careful return, you are in for a real treat!

Oh, and with the appetite that you built up on the way out there and back, the pig roast at Miss Lucy's full moon party, with the rising moon shimmering across Friis and Coral bays, makes for a mighty fine pit stop on the way home.

Tell me more about Miss Lucy's party. I've heard about it for years and have never been there. Is it only pig or do they have other things available. I would like to try the grouper reuben. Does it get crowded, do they have a band, etc. Thank you.

Roast pig is on the menu (and awesome), but they also serve other things. It does get crowded, such that you need to arrive early or else get lucky to get a seat and parking. Spill-over parking out along the road is creative, but riskier. There has been live music when we have caught it; not sure if that is always the case. If you were ambitious and had a light, night snorkeling wouldn't be out of the question.

Have never been to the full moon party, nor the brunch, but have had lunch there a few times (after morning beach/snorkeling at Salt Pond or Lameshure's, etc.) The Grouper Reuben is absolutely amazing!!!! So, swing by at lunch and give it a try. Plus, the setting/scenery can't be beat.
