Dream Big!

Post by parafins »

http://newsofstjohn.com/wp-content/uplo ... -view-.jpg Hello forum family! This is parafins again coming out of the lurking closet. I hope you all had a great year and I wish you a even better year ahead. I keep up with the island news daily, and long to return but hopes are dim. I don't think there's a day that goes by that my mind returns to my favorite rock. I'm obsessed to the point that I try not to bring up any current info about the island to my wife. She likes the island but living it daily is to much. I just can't get enough and long to live there. Just around Christmas a listing came up of the 'Hawks Nest" for a mere 1.3 million! If I could buy this place I would, what a perfect location inside the park with a small quaint home.It seems like the island has made a few changes since my last visit back in 2011. I like the snack bar/kayak rental on Honeymoon ,and the next time I visit I want to paddle out to Henley Cay. I still miss the loss of Maho Bay Campground, but life moves on. My best,Parafins(Dan)

Dan, I too miss Maho Campgrounds. As a lone traveler (husband won't fly) it was the cheapest ($60/night...what!) and yet most fun place to stay. But, as you say, life goes on and I find myself fortunate enough to be able to go back this May. :)
Keep the positive thoughts flowing and get creative with how to make it happen. Good luck! Hope to see you on "The Rock" someday! :D
Friends, they go away then they re-appear...I believe there is Magic here.

Ahh parafns - I feel the same way...would love to live or even just stay for a month or so...My boyfriend doesn't feel the same - I think though that I would miss my grands, so a month or a season would be perfect. I hope that one day I will be able to do it...I work at home so the "job" is not a problem...New Years Res is to pay off bills so this can be attempted soon...not getting any younger.
Happy New Years!!!

An inexpensive way to visit the island is by volunteering. Concordia Eco Resort has the same of program that Maho Bay Camps had. You work several hours a day in exchange for lodging, and discounts on food, etc. http://www.concordiaeco-resort.com/work ... e-program/

You can also volunteer at VIERS in exchange for lodging, food, etc. http://www.islands.org/viers/supportstaff2.htm

Both programs offer an opportunity to visit St. John and experience the island from a different perspective than the average tourist.

If you want to come to St. John, you will find a way.

Always good to hear from you. Cinnamon Bay Campground is still around. There are some inexpensive places on VRBO. I finally bought my place in the sun and its a boat, for about 5% of what my modest villa would have cost.

Cheers, RickG
