Island Healthcare?

Post by Jeff&Cindy »

Couchbound today with one of those nasty head colds. Just returned from our local 'convenient care' with some meds to hopefully knock it out of me.

Daydreaming of life on the island, but wondering, how's the healthcare there for stuff like this?

The residents on this forum can certainly add more value than I can in response to the question, but here is my take from a tourist perspective.

When we were there in 2007, my wife got a UTI on our first day there and had to get medical attention. Obviously, we were worried about how this might go. We found the clinic, I think up on Centerline Road, and had an absolutely great experience. The staff was very helpful, the wait was not terribly long, and the Dr. was first class. He took care of things with an IV antibiotic and we were able to enjoy the rest of our vacation with no issues. Of course a lot has changed in health care since 2004, but if the clinic is anything like it was them, I would be perfectly fine going there for routine medical care.

Insurance and billing was handled for us exactly as it would have been in a stateside clinic.

We used the Myrah Keating clinic a few weeks ago for our daughter. It was terrific & I wouldn't hesitate to use them again or recommend them to others.

A friend was there in February and used the clinic for a simple wound infection. She was advised by the property manager to call ahead and set up an appointment. She was told it would effect the way it was billed to her insurance. If she made an appointment it would be billed like an office visist, if not it would be charged like an ER visit. She was happy with the care and she has worked in hospitals for 30 years.

Last May, my friend developed what we thought was the stomach bug. She was taken to the clinic and was diagnosed with an appendicitis. She was transported by water ambulance to St. Thomas. Her care at both locations was great! She was even able to enjoy a day trip to JVD later in the week with Born to Rhumb which was also awesome!

Here's another endorsement for the Myrah Keating Clinic. My husband had to go because of gout - when he came back he gave them a glowing review. I have *never* heard my husband say anything nice about any doctor / clinic / hospital experience except that one (most of his other healthcare reviews are not printable due to excessive profanity). :D
